Hi
I'm new to this group and been on active surveillance for over 7 years now and am aged 64.
For me it's a matter of hearing the medical advice and questioning the facts, bearing in mind that my view is that medics tend to want to find an answer, cure and move on when blitzing the prostate may not be necessary yet. Particularly given the incontinence and impotence side effects. Take a look at my biography that I have just written.
New procedures and trials are constantly in the offing. In the time I have been on active surveillance these focal therapies have come on stream with greatly reduced side effects so I am currently pleased to have pushed back and waited.
I am interested to see other peoples journey on active surveillance.
Feel free to give feedback and ask questions.
All the best.
Nigel
Hi David
Yours is a good pathway so far.
Given a consultant recently told me they don't even consider Gleason 3+3 cancer, do you ever find yourself thinking it would have been better to have not had that first PSA?
Nigel
Hi Nigel
Well I had a Gleeson 3+3 and over 4 years it approached the capsule edge.
So yes some Gleeson 3+3 slow growing or non growing but certainly not all
Regards
Steve
Hi Nigel
Yes I do regret having that PSA test 9 years ago.
My health was perfect but now I have a chronic condition which was caused by the 38 core biopsy.
I've found being on AS stressful at times. I had a lot of sleepless nights especially at the beginning. I've been close to having treatment a few times but always decided against it, mainly because I don't want more intervention after the biopsy bad experience.
On a positive note, I didn't have an aggressive cancer.
Best wishes
David
David,
So sorry you've had all that worry and bad side effects from the biopsy. Hopefully you'll never need treatment.
All the best, Nigel
Thanks Nigel
I wish you well with your active surveillance.
As you say, better treatments are coming should we need them at some time in the future.
David
