I have the following symptoms and have an appointment with GP on Thursday
A Frequent urination
B Discoloured semen
C Dribbling
D Fatigue
I have just turned 55 and my cousin had prostate cancer diagnosis around the same age (had procedure but did not require any follow up treatments).
I know that I may need to have an internal examination when I see GP later this week but I have read this could increase PSA. Would it be better to have the PSA test and then the the examination or is there a standard NHS protocol?
Hi Mick
PSA test the most important thing. DRE doesn't necessarily help as he can't feel the whole prostate.
Have PSA , go for results with GP and he can do DRE then
If PSA normal though probably everything ok although if concerned u could have another one in 6 months
Best wishes
Steve
Thanks Steve for the advice. Kind regards Mick.
Hi Mick 28.12.22 if the DRE puts the PSA up it really won’t be a problem. If your PSA is below 5 and examination clear then I doubt they will do anything further. A high PSA (above 10) isn’t necessarily PCa, all rather confusing. Only a biopsy will tell you positively and unless anything found prior, you probably don’t need one. I was confused when you said discoloured semen, what colour is it?
Best wishes, David

Thanks David. It is a charcoal colour and from what I've read this could be possibly old blood. How long does it normally take to obtain PSA result?
Hi Mick 28.12.22 how long is a piece of string? The bloods can be tested fairly quickly but getting the results can take a while. If you have access to the NHS App or your surgery you might get results within a day. It is a bit of a postcode lottery, I can’t see hospital tests but can get GP information (I am in Hampshire). Otherwise it will be via a nurse or Doctor by phone or in person.
Best wishes, David

Thanks for your reply David and I can normally see blood tests results so I'll see how things pan out on Thursday. Best wishes Michael
