Hi All, my name is Mike. I have, recently, been diagnosed with Prostate cancer. Fortunately, they seem to have found mine at an early stage.
My query concerns back pain after having my biopsy about 5 -6 weeks ago. I have, occasionally, had back pain in the past but it would last for 2-3 days and then go. This latest bout - started approx. 3 weeks after the biopsy - was, for several days, excruciatingly painful and for another week, or so, uncomfortable. It is the longest time I have ever experienced back pain. Eventually, I had to visit an Osteopath.
A couple of weeks ago I spoke to a work colleague, who had treatment for PC several years ago, and he told me that he had, also, experienced back pain after his biopsy. Has anyone else had back pain after their biopsy and with mine not occurring until three weeks after my biopsy do you think it is unrelated?
Many thanks, Mike
Hi Mike, it sounds like your back pain should be investigated. First by your cancer team via your cancer care nurse (if that’s what yours is called) and if that’s not possible your GP.
Your profile is blank at the moment so no one knows anything about you but you could sketch in some of your history so there’s a better chance of more informed answers to your questions. At the top of the page there is a round green icon of an arm-chair, click it and it will lead you to a page where you can compile a brief (or not) history of what’s happened to you up to now.
As for pain relief. Paracetamol two pills four times a day and ibuprofen the same dose (in between the paracetamol doses) but only if you are not on blood thinners.
That will lower your pain immediately but it’s best to get clinician’s advice not my advice. I’m not a doctor.
I use the nurse line of my local hospice (as an out patient) for their advice on pain relief. They have been a really big help. But I don’t know if you have any dialogue with a Hospice, if not perhaps you should have, as I’ve found it to be a big help.
Any hoo, good luck.
Hello Mike
Any new pain starting during a Prostate Cancer journey should be investigated. It's happened to me twice (once back and once shoulder). Each time my Oncologist has sent me back to my own GP and each time the issue has been resolved - both due to other factors.
If you are on any treatment for your Prostate Cancer you should check with your team or GP BEFORE you take any medication as you can have a medication clash.
Best wishes- Brian

Hello Mike. As others have said your back pain needs investigating. If it helps I had a really sharp pain in my back / side a few times over a few days. Then a very uncomfortable session one night, even worse when breathing in, which lasted for over an hour. Very different to the occasional back-ache maybe after lifting something heavy. The GP saw me the next morning and I was referred to hospital straight away. This happened 2 months after the biopsy - and turned out to be a pulmonary embolism. A while later I noticed a poster in the cancer centre which said a quarter of people with cancer could be prone to blood clots / embolisms. This one was quickly treated with Apixaban blood thinners and any sensation in that area when exercising cleared within a month. Just a thought…
