Hello, I'm new (again) to Macmillan...I will explain. I'm 83 with 5 kids and 7 grandchildren .5 years ago I was in the colon cancer group. I got that sorted with some major surgery - a hemicolectomy. For the next 5 years I had annual checks and colonoscopies. The result -  I was declared all clear.! Then I got cancer on my face with a lump on my nose. That was sorted too. Now I have prostate cancer Gleason 7 (4 + 3), so a new journey begins. Meanwhile my eldest son has melanoma and is undergoing tough immunotherapy and my beautiful wife died of MND in January. (I don't make this stuff up !) I'm 83 and quite active, driving, playing guitar in my band, travelling a bit to France and I hope to visit my eldest daughter in Sydney at Xmas and so on.

I'm still here and very keen to maintain my QoL. I don't yet have a treatment plan from my oncologist but I'm already thinking ahead and doing a bit of internet browsing. I came across some places promoting focal therapy. Anyone know anything about that?

I look forward to "meeting" some of you and if I can help in any way I'm delighted to do so.

  • Hi and welcome to the club. You obviously have an ability to overcome and I wish you all the best with your plan.

Focal therapy would be only possible if there’s no metastasis so I hope your prorate cancer is contained.

Although the nano-knife always sounded like a step forward when it was touted as the next big thing, I’ve not heard anyone have any treatment from one. Perhaps you can inform us how you go.

    Is it privately available only?

    Good luck Fingers crossed

  • Hi thanks for this. Yes it's contained or at least I've been told after PET scan it hasn't spread elsewhere which is not quite the same thing. It's very early days. My prelim research indicates it is also available sometimes on nhs. I will update as I go along. My main concern is , as I say, QoL not longevity - I've had a great life;no complaints. I'm just cautious about getting the right balance now I'm in my 80's. Different considerations for my son who is only 52 and with a young family at home. Thanks for listening !

  • The route we travel is our own choice and if you’re one hundred per cent behind the idea your QoL will be sustained. It’s that that sometimes is the only way forward, so tread it with confidence.

  • Hi Roger

Do you have any PSA figures and what does the MRI say in terms of tumour size .....so that we can give best advice

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Hello Roger (

Welcome to the group from me, although I am so sorry to find you here.

HIFU is available in some NHS areas but as far as I am aware isn't routinely offered across the NHS. I am aware if your diagnosis is a T1 or T2 you can have this in the private sector for around £15,000. Sadly in this modern day and age in the NHS your age will be against you so depending on your PSA/Oncologist Radiotherapy only may be the best route for you to maintain your present quality of life.

As you do now have a Prostate Cancer diagnosis I would urge you to ask all of your sons to have a PSA test as the cancer tends to crop up in the family line.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Sure. Prev 200cc HOLEP surgery 2019 Current PSA 9.4 MRI T2/T3a early right peripheral zone. maximum cancer core length 11 mm with perineural invasion.

  • That's helpful Brian. Thankyou. I don't yet know what the oncologist is going to recommend. I need some flow tests first. On my 2 sons - oh yes ! I'm right on their case and also on my 3 sons in law for good measure !! Best to you.

  • Thanks Roger (

Not always offered but if there's no spread Brachytherapy may be an option.

    Brachytherapy-for-prostate-cancer.

    Always worth asking the question.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Ok, so stats fairly low, only exception is T3 which indicates just outside the gland but nowhere else.

Best bet could be Radiotherapy and HT, Radiotherapy is pretty easy really and hopefully HT for a shortish time.

    Best wishes
