Has anybody on this forum had a transplant as well as having prostate cancer? It would be good to compare notes.

  • Hello Graham (

I have run a search of the threads and came up with a blank on this subject. That's not to say we haven't got a member who has had a transplant so you may get a reply meeting your criteria.

It would be a good idea to join the kidney group and put the same post up there - here's the link you need

    Kidney cancer forum

As an aside I had kidney issues at the start of my journey (CKD and eGFR of 8 Angry). You can read the details by clicking on my name or avatar.

I hope the above helps and you find someone in a similar situation.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Graham, my husband falls i to this category.

What stage are you at ?

  • Hi  , thanks for responding.  I have tagged  in case they no longer actively monitor this site and will hopefully get an email reminder.

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Metastatic Castrate Resistant Prostate Cancer on Decapeptyl injections and Abiraterone. Metastases in bones. PSA is increasing. I have a CT scan booked for 29th December.

  • Hi Graham,

    Thanks fir the reply

My husband had his prostate removed Oct 23, all looked good initially with no spread however his PSA is now rising so pushing to see his consultant now rather than the scheduled may appointment.

His transplant is 33 years and function has just returned to 40% following the drop after the operation.

How has your transplant coped with hormone treatment if you don't mind me asking.

    Caz

  • 33 years is very good for 40%. I am at about 40% after 9 years. The hormone treatment  has not affected my kidney. When my first hormone treatment started to fail the oncologist was going to put me on Enzalutamide but my nephrologist objected so I went on Abiraterone.

  • Graham it sounds like your oncologist and renal team work well together.

How long is it since you were diagnosed with prostate cancer, and have you only had HT... sorry for asking so.many questions

We are on a waiting game at the moment for the consultant to come back to us and im trying to understand what options ghee may be for my husband.

    Thank you in advance

  • I am 73 years old. I am not very happy with my current cancer treatments. They never seem to be in a hurry to change treatments to fight the cancer..

I was diagnosed in 2018 and had a prostatectomy in 2018. The cancer recurred in lymph nodes in 2020 and I had radiotherapy to the lymph nodes and Decapeptyl hormone treatment. The initial hormone treatment stopped working in 2024. I then had the additional treatment of Bicalutamide, which worked for 6 months. A PSMA PET scan showed that I had some bone metastases. I then went on Abiraterone this year, which has not been working very well and my PSA is rising. I am now awaiting a new treatment option.

What treatments is your husband on for prostate cancer and the kidney transplant?

  • Graham

    Thanks for the reply

My husband is 69 and was diagnosed and had the prostatectomy in October 2023 and its only now that the PSA has risen so we are at a similar point that you were in 2020. The consultant wants to leave it another 6 months before looking at treatment options however we are pushing to bring that forward hopefully get a reply from him in the next week.

He also has his normal renal review early Jan so will raise things at that hopefully.

I hope you have some success in getting a new treatment plan soon.

    Caz

  • I suggest you try and get a scan done. PSMA PET scans are the most sensitive to see where the PSA is coming from. Then consider radiotherapy to the source of the PSA. The earlier you can get another treatment done, the better, especially if it is an aggressive type. My Gleason score was 8/9 which is very aggressive.
