My 55 year old brother has told us he has cancer in his prostate (high grade), lower bowel and liver. Bowel is the primary. It is stage 4. He has had a port inserted in his chest for chemo. Which will happen later this week. We don’t live in the same state of Australia and are wondering how best to support him and our elderly parents. I don’t know if his expectation to return to work in the new year is realistic. We don’t have any idea about timelines either.
I feel I need to become more informed quickly and I would find talking to someone helpful for my own mental health.

  • "Hello

A warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Community - although I am so sorry to find you here.

Supporting someone with cancer is always a difficult issue as we are all different. Some don't want to know, others are open and will talk about their issues. All I can say (as someone with cancer) is be there for your brother and your parents and check what you can do for them.

To be able to give you more advice regarding your brother's Prostate Cancer we would need some information from his diagnosis - PSA figures. TNM Staging and Gleason Score.

You may well wish to ask questions regarding the other cancer sites as Bowel is the primary and here are a couple of links for you:

Bowel (colon and rectal) cancer forum  and Liver cancer forum

Once the page opens up, just click on "join" on the black banner at the bottom of the page. you can then either copy and paste or repost your original post in the "New Here - Say Hello" section of the group.

I do hope the above helps, if I can do anything else for you please let me know.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Louise, I hope you can get the help you both need.  Brian (Milibob) is a great help.

We are all here for you both.

I bet you are having good weather!  Dull, cold and foggy here in the West Midlands.

    Take Care
