I've belatedly joined the group having been diagnosed with advanced Prostate cancer following a random blood test earlier this year which revealed a high PSA count. I'm well into the journey with four sessions of chemo completed, two to go, the last scheduled for 27th December. The biggest issue I face is taste and finding foods I can tolerate. Secondly tiredness, I tried a bit of DIY yesterday morning and it wiped me out for the test of the day. Good excuse to sit down and watch a movie though ;-) All very frustrating, but no doubt experiences shared by many others.
Thanks for listening

Hello AJSM30 and welcome to the family. My husband had 6 rounds of chemotherapy and finished this time last year. His experience was that the fatigue became worse the more cycles he had but that things improved from about a month after completing the course. Some men find that increasing exercise helps. As for taste, try taking some ice cubes with you to suck on during the infusion and for half an hour afterwards - this reduces the blood flow in the mouth and restricts the Docetxel from getting there. I found that I had to increase the level of herbs and spices in food to make it more tasty for him. He completely went off tea and coffee but found that diluted fruit juices were better for him. I must admit that I was a bit paranoid about making sure he only had cooked food with plenty of home made soups, casseroles, porridge and fed him little and often. Again it took about a month before things started to get back to normal but was a good 3 months before he could stomach things like coffee.
Please feel free to join in any of the conversations and ask whatever questions you want.
Hello R,
I finished chemo just over 8 weeks ago. The side effects you are experiencing are similar to some of those I had and as you'd expect they do subside in time, although can become a little worse with each cycle.
I found there was not much you could do about fatigue, although exercise does help but is difficult when it hits you hard. I found it lasted a while and just took things very easy, then one morning I got up and it had suddenly lifted considerably.
Alwayshope has provided some excellent tips for coping with side effects. If you're interested in reading a little more I started a blog of my treatment - if you click on Blogs across from the search bar at the top of the page you'll find mine under Prostate Cancer Recurrence - Triple Therapy
If you have any questions just ask and I'll do my best to answer.
I hope your remaining two cycles go well and that the treatment is successful for you.
All the best,
Derek.

Thank you Alwayshope, your reply and advice is appreciated. It sounds as though I might have gotten off lightly by comparison. It's day 11 since my last session and some resemblance of taste is returning. My manager has been trying out various things on me and we have a sort of go to menu. My favourites so far have been lemon bread and butter pudding, rice pudding or porridge with honey. Mushroom risotto was good as well. Turning up the herbs and spices has not worked for me unfortunately.
Thank you once again.
Ray
