I saw a nurse for a routine blood test and she added a psa test - got a score of 37 and second test is 40. I am 72 and very fit despite having mild copd - apart from needing to pee more often never had any problems- seeing doctor next week and pretty terrified- should I be expecting’ you have a few weeks or months’ with those scores - I have no idea !

  • Hi Scrabble and welcome

Probably a bit premature to be thinking about weeks or months.

Raised PSA can be down to infection so probably next thing is to have a MRI to see what's going on.

Hopefully that is what your Dr will suggest when u see him next week.

But even if prostate cancer these days easily treatable as long as not spread in a big way although even if it is still very much treatable.

With a PSA of 30/40 doesn't indicate anything too major but a MRI is needed to confirm.

    Let us know

    Best wishes

    Steve

  • Hello

A warm welcome to the Macmillan Online Prostate Community although I am so sorry to find you here but we are a decent bunch.

A PSA test is an indicator of prostate Cancer and the formal diagnosis is normally confirmed by way of a biopsy and or an MRI scan or both, Our guide to a PSA test and results is in this link:

    https://www.macmillan.org.uk/cancer-information-and-support/diagnostic-tests/psa-test

With scores of 37 & 40 it's highly likely you will be joining "the club you didn't want to join" however with the various treatment paths available it is very much treatable - in fact 98% of men diagnosed with Prostate Cancer die WITH it not OF it!!

Keep us posted as to your progress, use only trusted sources for your information, Macmillan or Prostate Cancer UK  and NOT Dr Google. Feel free to ask any questions you have however trivial - we have all been where you are now.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello  and a warm welcome to the prostate cancer forum. Firstly, most men who are now diagnosed with prostate cancer are living for YEARS. Yes your PSA is high and could be indicative of cancer but this doesn't necessarily mean that you have cancer as there is a condition called BHP (Benign prostatic hyperplasia) - enlarged prostate -which can produce the symptoms you describe. Urine infections could also be a culprit. The doctor next week will probably give you a digital rectal examination (finger up the bum) which lets them feel the prostate and will be the first indication if they suspect you have a problem. If it is suspected that you have cancer then they will suggest a referral to urology who will organise a scan and then possibly a biopsy. All of this is going to take a little while so what I have done is given you a link to a free book which you can download explaining the different tests, diagnosis and then treatment for different prostate problems.

Please come back with any questions and we will try and help.

  • Hi Scrabble,

Just to add to the advice previously given, my husband had an award winning (if there was such a competition) psa score of 1200. He was immediately given hormone treatment that lowers testosterone, which this particular cancer needs to grow, and his score went down very quickly to around 2. That was three years ago and, apart from many other health issues, he is still with us.

Let us know how it went with the doctor and don't be afraid when you see the gloves go on, it doesn't hurt and only takes seconds. Us women have a lot more to contend with than that, I can assure you Laughing!!!

    Best regards

    Gina

  • Hi  , I had a PSA score 74 over 7 years ago.  Banish the thoughts of weeks and months, instead use years and decades!  Good luck.  David

    Best wishes, David
