My partner who is 47 who I've been with for 18year and have a beautiful 4 year old girl with has just been told he has advanced prostate cancer. This is a huge shock because he had no symptoms until end of April/early May when he suddenly couldn't pee very well. We had him checked for UTI and that came back negative. He was then made redundant in mid May and started a new job in June. This probably distracted him a bit from the issue. Things ramped up a bit and the dr did an exam and said his prostate was enlarged and sent him for a PSA test. This was 26.59 and told to repeat in 2 weeks. However things got a bit worse and they though it was prostitis and 2 weeks of antibiotics given with Tamsulosin and a follow up appt made for the day the abx ran out. GP wasn't happy so did An urgent referral. Urology called and wanted another PSA test hut partner wanted an MRI and they agreed. Same day appt was made and 2 weeks for results. 1 week later GP called with the devastating news. Advanced prostate cancer thats in the bones (bone scan automatically done with MRI due to age) The cancer has spread to the right hip, femur, pelvis, lymphnodes, seminal vessels, and another bone near is butt. Biopsy done on Tuesday and a genetic biopsy but CNS said we are looking at grades 4 or 5 (worst case for aggressive) They also want a full body scan to check for other areas for cancer and a bladder check. They said its not in his spine which is good. He also starter Dergarlux injections on Tues and was given a loading dose. They are talking about triple therapy, hormone injections, hormone tablets and chemo. Has any had this combination? Anyone still leading a normal life with advanced cancer? I'm absolutely devastated and worry the affect this will have on my little girl.

  • Good Morning

A warm welcome to the Macmillan Prostate Community, although I am so sorry to find you here.

I have been "catching up" this morning and read your original post in the "New to the Community" section. I see my friend Mike (The Highlander) has given you some great advice, however at that point wasn't aware you live in the Bahamas and most of the help lines apply to the UK only.

We as a group are more than happy to try and help and perhaps it would be a good idea to introduce yourself in the "New Here - Say Hello" section with a new thread - more people will see you and understand the issues you and your husband are having and I am sure you will receive plenty of offers of help.

Also Mike gave you this link to another group on the Community where you might find help and here it is again-

    Carers only forum

    I hope the above helps.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello All,

I hope you are all well? It's been awhile since I posted/came onto this amazing group. I just wanted to say hello and give an update.

Where to start? All I can say is what a whirlwind its been!

Oct 2024 my OH went for his first chemo and absolutely smashed it, great I thought, 2/3 hours at the hospital is doable.....how wrong was I?! 2nd chemo session and 10mins in and my partner says "I do not feel well!" I looked up and he was bright red in the race and his face changed completely! Very quickly the nurses responded and it was established he was having an allergic reaction and we was sent on our way home. Telephone consultation with the consultant and its decided to stick with the same drug, but add more steriods (liquid form) 30mins before chemo and antihistamines. It was also decided that he would need to be on a very slow rate and the chemo session would need to be on 4 hours at least. This meant each chemo session would be at least 6hrs + (one was 8hrs long 2 days before Xmas) but at least we still have the first option of chemo drug.

November a CT scan was done and there was a 30% decrease already GrinningGrinning so carry on with the triplet therapy and same drug with extra precautions to prevent the reaction.

Beginning of February a CT scan and MRI done. End of February Chemo completed. We have had the CT scan results and they're happy with that, they just want him to continue with the tablets and injections every 28days. We are still awaiting the MRI scan results. We were meant to find out on the 28th March, however it was rescheduled until 11th April.

I have also decided to do a 5k race for life this year Grimacing so I've been busy trying to train for that!

  • Hi  sounds a tricky 2nd session but he did well to get through the rounds and results are looking good.  Waiting for results is hard, but sounds like everything going to plan. Thanks for keeping us up to date. Good luck,  David

    Best wishes, David

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Hello

Thank you very much for the update - it looks like everything is (almost) going to plan and things are looking good.

I have also decided to do a 5k race for life this year

I have done this only walked the course - and wasn't last to finish - good luck - it's a great day out.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Good morning , just reading through many posts as I do most days to help me through this journey with my husband who was diagnosed with stage 4 early last year and doing OK.

    How's things with yourselves? X

  • Hi Drifter,

Like you, my husband diagnosed 2 years and 3 months ago and he is currently doing well. Of course, it is always a worry but we our living life to the full and doing almost everything we want to do.

This community is amazing and it will help you greatly if you could put your husband journey details on your profile so people with similar diagnosis can help. If you go into our profile you could see the treatment and diagnosis of Jacob.

    Lots of love

  • Hi Drifter, I hope you’re ok? This community is amazing and I don’t use it enough. I have a 5 year old and work in a busy environment so life takes over. My partner was diagnosed in August 24 with stage 4 incurable cancer. He’s been doing ok up until recently where he’s been suffering with hip and pelvic pain (where the cancer is) and his been referred for another MRI. His PSA is still very low and we are hoping it’s just the osteoporosis causing him pain, but we won’t know just yet
