Hi, ,  i have said before of my husbands health , Prostrate cancer and dementia, and the Consultant has now told me ,,he’s not simply refusing to accept his illness ,,,but he’s also got ANOSOGNOSIA ,,,meaning his brain doesn't have the ability to understand his problems he’s got , ( apparently it’s quite common in dementia)  , Apologies  for the following discussion , but ,,,  can anyone recommend a gentle laxative that my husband could take daily , he’s really struggling to go to the toilet and is having to resort to physically get it out , I can’t get him to go the Drs ,,,he says it’ll be ok ,,don’t worry ,,, and  i don’t know if the Dr will prescribe FOR HIM without him being there ,,,,, ,  again apologies for the subject . i’d be grateful of  the advice ,

. At the last appointment with his nurse specialist  at Hospital , It was my daughter and myself who spoke to the nurse specialist, ,,she told us that ,,,,going by his latest PSA  and what i said about how he is  just generally  ,,,,she was sure the cancer has started to spread , and no point in putting him through scans etc that day ,,, and to have them in again September, that was April ,
Gena .

  • Hi again Gena.

The two common over the counter laxatives are Dulcolax or DulcoEase and Senokot. You can get liquid versions as well as tablets so the liquid might be easier to get down him. If he is totally averse to medication then try giving him a couple of kiwi fruits a day as they can promote bowel movements and if you can get him to eat Greek yoghurt with them even better as this will improve the gut biome and help soften the stools. Also pineapple helps to break down protein and can alter the stool consistency.

It must be so difficult for you Gena so make sure you look after yourself.

  • Good morning alwayshope . and thank you for replying ,last night was a bad night and i think i got just a couple hours sleep. i’m grateful for your quick response ,,,i’ll get my daughter to pick some up this morning ,,,l was nervous of giving him over the counter ones ,,,as the last thing i want is the complete opposite of how things are ,,,,if you get my meaning , Hope You have a good day .

  • These are both recommended by the NHS. They can take 2/3 days to work. For faster relief then a pharmacy can supply an enema but I think it better to try the more gentle approach first. My husband has a dose in the evening if he needs it, maybe for a couple of days and this sorts him out.

  • Hi Gena7.

Good morning sorry to hear about your husband's current problems with his bowels.

Yes you could also try Lacoste as I have used that with good effect in the past.

I have also used Senocot which has always helped.

I also find drinking plenty of water with juice helps get things moving quite quickly.

I do hope that this helps????

    Prostate Worrier.

  • Good morning Prostate Worrier.

Just for clarification - Lactulose (made from lactose) is a synthetic product. Lactose is a sugar found in dairy products but is not used as a laxative per se because it can raise the blood sugar levels, which Lactulose doesn't unless used long term. The Dulcolax is gentler than Senokot which acts to increase peristalsis (gut movement) so Dulcolax is the first option.

  • Hi Gena

i recently had my prostate removed and was told to try to eat foods that wouldn’t make me constipated, to that end I would have a drink of fresh orange juice at breakfast and one in the evening plus something like a satsuma during the day. For me, this kept me regular and going to the toilet was pretty easy and I don’t recall ever having to strain during that period where I had to be careful.

I don’t know if this will be of any use you, I’m not saying do this instead of medication, it’s just what I chose to do.

Best wishes to you & your husband

    John

  • Hi Gena, I’ve found licorice very useful, not Bassetts Allsorts but rather Pontefract Cakes.

    Good luck, Dave
