Hi new to this
husband just had prostate removed 8 weeks ago
He’s struggling a little with waterworks side . He is doing pelvic floor exercises how long does it take for leakage to settle
any advice is welcome
Hi Jackie, welcome to the Prostate forum. From talking to others who had the surgery, it sounds like your husband is doing all he can. Hopefully it should settle down soon. There are lots of men in his position here who will be able to offer you more advice.
I was unsuitable for surgery so went down the Hormones and Radiotherapy route. My waterworks problems were mainly the flow had reduced to a trickle. All because of the Radiation.
After a couple of months it was nearly back to full flow, if you know what I mean.
Everyone heals at different rates. Some lucky men don't get any symptoms at all.
Hope it starts to clear up soon.

Impossible to say I am afraid. We all respond differently.I am around 15 weeks post and so far it has not improved. I have a friend who improved after 12 weeks, another is 8 years post and still has problems. Stats show that 98% of men recover continence 3 to 18 months post.
Is he dry at night (when laying down)? That usually comes first. Then it starts improving when relaxed, but may still leak when tired.
Can he stop peeing mid-stream? That's a good way to find the right muscle to exercise during pelvic floor, and also to see how strong it is. If he can stop peeing very quickly that way, pelvic floor is strong, whereas if it takes some time to stop or he can't stop peeing mid stream, then pelvic floor is not so strong or even quite weak. It's not good to routinely do this while peeing, although occasionally to check the strength of the pelvic floor and that you're still using the right muscle won't do any harm. Many men exercise the wrong muscles, e.g. shouldn't be clenching buttocks at all - they should be relaxed, and shouldn't be holding breath - rest of body should be relaxed.
As well as doing pelvic floor exercises, he should also do a pelvic floor pre-contraction wherever he does something that causes a leak, such as while changing from sitting to standing and back, coughing, sneezing, etc. This will eventually become subconscious.
Hi jackie. I had mine removed September ( 5 months ago). I was horrified initially. I was ok sitting and lying down but as soon as I got up I flooded and when I was standing / walking, etc it flowed out what seemed to be almost continuously. I used a bottle each time I stood up to collect what I could as I couldn't even make it to the toilet / bathroom about 6 metres away. Tried lots of pads and found that Tena 3 were by far the best although the most expensive. I was doing about pelvic floor exercising about every hour, when I could. Saw the incontinence nurse after 3 months. She said I was doing too many pelvic floor exercises and my muscles would be straining and these should be limited to 3 times 10+10 a day. I was susceptible but thought I would listen to her. About two weeks later I had a great improvement. I do wonder though whether that is coincidence. I found I could make the toilet when standing and also sometimes walk around for a while without a problem. WEnt down from 3/4 pad a day to 1/2. Since then things have improved both physically and mentally albiet very slowly. I can now walk much further without a problem. I do have good days and bad days for no apparent reason. I have experimented with different foods and drinks but not noticed any differences. I have been drinking decaf tea and coffee and cut out alcohol since my op. I was thinking about getting a clamp but decided against it after speaking to the incontinence nurse. I did think I was going to be one of the statistics who never recovered. I am far more confident now all will be good or as a minimum it will improve adequately.
Thank you for your reply
my husband finds that every day different . He can use few pads one day and loads next . Night time is the same . He’s struggling a bit coming to terms with it all especially on physical side . He has always been able to make it to toilet but has had couple of accidents which gets him down . He cut out alcohol too. Also fizzy juice . Surgeon and after team are pleased with his progress . He has been doing pelvic floor exercises too but not overdoing them like yiu he was at first but was told to cut them down . I’ve bought a man’s urine bottle for in car for him to use in emergency if he needs toilet when we are travelling far .,Anything to make his life easier
Thank you I’ll pass all this on to him as he is doing exercises but any advice helps
