Bone Biopsy

Hello wonderful people. My dad is 75, Gleason 9, T3a N0Mx, diagnosed in Feb. On HT but still awaiting further treatment. Bone scan 2 weeks ago revealed a spot on his right shoulder and a spot on his right thigh. He now needs a bone biopsy so they can decide best course of action. Have any of you had a bone biopsy? Is it general or local anaesthetic? His letter doesn't say and we have to travel 50 miles to have it done. Thanks for any info.

  • Sorry, I have no experience of bone biopsy, hopefully someone will be able to answer your question.

  • Hi Chezza

I lifted this info from the Macmillan site, hope it assists.

The surgeon uses a small needle to take a small sample of the tumour. They will give you a local anaesthetic to numb the area. You will usually be awake during a needle biopsy. But the doctor may give you a sedative so that you feel relaxed and sleepy. Sometimes the biopsy is done under a general anaesthetic, so you are asleep during the test.

Your surgeon may use a scan, such as a CT, ultrasoundor x-ray during the biopsy. This helps guide them to the right place.

Don't let your good days be spoilt by the worry of a bad day, that may or may not come along.

  • Thank you Mally Pray

His letter says he may be in around 6 hours so that would add up. I guess I'll just kick around the town until he's ready to come home.

    Take care Blush
