Hey all,
My husband who is 53 was diagnosed in Jan 2025 with metastatic prostate cancer - stage IV. His PSA was 85, it had spread to lymph nodes in chest and pelvis.
He went straight on the hormone therapy and then chemo and then radiation and has stayed on the hormone therapy.
We saw his consultant for routine check up this week, and the consultant said his PSA is negligible. With that, I asked if they considered this to be remission, and the consultant said yes!
Now, while we know the cancer will never be gone as it had spread quite far, does remission mean cancer free 'for the time being?'.
We know it's incredible news, but need to figure out exactly what it means!
Consultant said after 3 years, my husband may be able to come off the hormone meds for a while, see what happens - not sure about this!
Thanks so much
Hello MrsG14
Well that's a ,very positive post, we love positive posts on here.
We are all different, let me say that - so he's doing great and the treatment he's had has worked which is brilliant.
Now, while we know the cancer will never be gone as it had spread quite far,
I would say that the treatment he is on is working - a PSA for stage 4 of "negligible" is something to be very thankful for. I think he's like me - yes he "cancer free" for the time being.
Consultant said after 3 years, my husband may be able to come off the hormone meds for a while, see what happens - not sure about this!
I am on something called "intermittent hormone therapy" - they keep me on it for a period - the PSA lowers - I come off HT and my PSA rises and I go back on HT. The idea is the cancer can't overcome the HT and I don't become "Hormone Resistant" - and I have a decent quality of life. - if you click on my user name or avatar you can read my journey.
I hope this helps - happy to answer any questions.
Best wishes - Brian.
