Hello lovely people how are you all getting on today , I’ve come to see dad , he’s actually just had a walk from bedroom to toilet then to living room but I was quite concerned at how out of breath he was , but as soon as he got to his “ safe zone “ his bed it settled down

so it’s definitely like a panic attack when he has to leave his room combined with the cancer , does anyone else who has prostate / bone mets get out of breath

I’ve been to the local restaurant for dinner and got dad a small beef dinner to heat up later I hope he eats it , it’s all home made and will do him the word of good he’s only having toast in the morning then he will go all day until a nibble for tea , it’s unpredictable really

tomorrow I will be on the phone first thing I want to order him some ensure drinks and also get on to his consultant for answers and something moving forward as we all no I’m pretty desperate now for him to start something atleast a pill I would be happy !! Anything

  • Good and bad.

The breathlessness would normally be an issue for the lungs or heart not any cancer related issues normally.

Panic attacks are common and caused by stress.

if he’s out of breath in his seat of office (his bed) then that’s a bigger issue, if he’s calm in bed it’s likely to be as you already diagnosed, a panic attack.

Either way make a note of it and why you think it happened.

    Good luck Chloe

  • I agree with Mr U.

Panic attacks are due to stress.

I've had numerous during my time awaiting for tests and results...

  • Well he was like “ I need the toilet “ so I said well day slowly get yourself up use your trolly and head to the bathroom but he spent more time working things out and worrying he will fall that actually getting to the bathroom it’s about 18 steps there and 18 back and all he wanted to do was get back in bed this is the problem he’s obsessed with being in bed , but that’s were he is out of pain I guess

anyway he got to the toilet and back but whist doing this task was so out of breath

when he got back in bed he was absolutely fine not breathless at all ….

  • Hi  he has been in bed so long, using muscles again will be hard but keep up the good work.  If he can do it once he can do it again.  He needs to realise that he has two options, stay in bed and loose all his muscle mass or get up gradually and get back to old habits.  This is his way to recovery - small steps.

After 8 years on HT, fatigue is my enemy, but I listen to my body and where possible push myself.  His breathlessness may be a panic attack or simply effort to move 36 steps.  Hopefully next time he will feel slightly less knackered.

    Best wishes, David

  • Hi David,

I'm no expert but agree with you that it's more likely to be the fact that he has been in bed for such a long time without any exercise that his muscles are now struggling when he moves hence the breathlessness.

It's surprising how quickly muscle wastage happens, but the important thing is that those first small steps have now been taken & they can be built on.  Even when lying in bed, flexing leg & arm muscles will help.

when you do get to speak to the consultant it might be worth mentioning the breathlessness to them at the same time.  It may be that they could look into some simple physio exercises your dad could be doing whilst in bed to start improving his muscle tone.

    Best Wishes
