Evening all , so my dad and sister went to see his cancer consultant today and results of pet scan…the cancer has spread to his lymph nodes in the prostate area. And will need radiotherapy mon-Fri for 4-7 weeks. They also found a significant tumour in his kidney Which they felt was cancer but not linked?? But separate CT scan needed re that. He’s has a bad week as went for his first hormone injection on Monday but that didn’t happen as the surgery said he needed to bring in  the meds / prescription with him…he was confused and turns out the dr should have given him a prescription to collect and bring in in the day of the injection, the reception staff were most unhelpful and it was a real mess. Any way long story short I’ve picked up the meds for his 3 months worth of injection and he’s having it tomorrow.  Wondered if anyone else had come across that problem at their surgery, we wrongly assumed they would have the relevant injection their ready not have to collect it ourselves.   Anyway hopefully he has that tomorrow with no further hitch.    Going forward I need to work out how dad is getting to his radiotherapy. My mum is also very ill and doesnt drive in any event. Me and sisters will do what we can of course but do work full time, is there a service that provides transport for this type of treatment?  Also any tips re radiotherapy please, does the tiredness start straight away like he has experienced with the hormone tablets?   Ie do you feel ok to walk upstairs, make tea or just sleep a lot? Are you sat with other people or on own, or varies?  So much more whizzing around in my head but will leave it as that for now, many thanks for any guidance

  • Now that you presumably have a 3 monthly injection to be administered by a practice nurse, make a note to re order about 7/10 days beforehand.

I prefer to collect from the pharmacy but I also have the option to have it delivered to the Surgery.

I cannot help with the Radiotherapy but as regards transport,I know there is a transport service to bring in patients from the outlying areas which use Sheffields Weston Park Hospital.I don’t have first hand experience of this but understandably others experience waiting times making appointments longer than using private transport.

  • Sorry you have to be here but welcome.

The injection and GPs can be confusing and confused. Surprised 1st one not given at hospital then responsibility passed to GP. Some order and have it ready when you arrive. Some expect you to order, collect and take it in with you. Be sure you're all agreed as to which!

Also be sure that reception understand that not all practice nurses qualified to administer it.

I think that tiredness/ fatigue from EBRT varies considerably from patient to patient. I cycled min 10 miles every day of the 28 days over which the 20 fractions were delivered. Guess much depends on general health and fitness   -  and LUCK!

    Good luck to your dad

    Dave.
