I’ve started to write a lot in here lately it seems to help me let off some steam as my dads not very well with prostate cancer diagnosis spread to hip and spine

I have a question

The specialist had a meeting about dad on Wednesday and have since rang me and want dad to go in for a mri as they want to check for spinal cord compression, after this scan do we no how long it will be before they start possible treatment for dad , he’s been really ill now for 11 weeks and I don’t seem to be getting anywhere

so far he’s had bloods , psa bloods , urine sample , x ray , ct scan next will be his mri , he got offered a biopsy but he’s to ill to go through with that at the moment he’s very weak

also I’m trying to sort out ensure drinks for him but the doctor said his bmi is ok Thumbsup I mean I really beg the differ but does anyone no how I can push for these or do I have to buy them

he’s lost nearly 2 stone so I don’t no how they think he’s “ ok” he’s really not and very weak off his feet

thankyou

  • My husband is on the eternal waiting list pending treatment decision and has lost his appetite causing serious weight loss…and he was always a skinny person. His GP organised the surgery dietician  to call him and he was sent various “complain” type protein shakes through the post. I make him drink one daily along with the fortisip drinks I got off Amazon which are quite expensive. So best get in touch with GP asap?

  • I’m so sorry to se you on this forum but you are among kindred spirits here.

so I recon they had a MDM ( multi disciplinary meeting) on Wednesday where many different specialist get together and decide best way forward for your beloved dad.  It would be great if your dad can attend the MRI as that will enable the medics to put a plan in place which will support your dad.  It looks like the medical team are on the ball . So I doubt it will take long to get the results . If you think there’s a delay call the consultants secretary and chase them on.

Your dad has to agree to this and a way round it if he’s reluctant is to explain once he has the scan the medics will have a clearer picture to help him and give him the right medication etc to keep him pain free.

in Scotland you can self refer so it might be worth checking out if you can get a dietician to check him out and prescribe ensure drinks if appropriate . You can check him BMI yourself by taking his weight and go into the NHS website.  If this is not possible is there another doctor in the practice you can speak to . As they all have different opinions.

Does your dad have all the relevant allowances in place . If not speak to the specialist nursing team who will expedite this in his behalf .

best wishes to you & your dad
