Post Chemotherapy Oedema?

I’ve been down the GP’s today about my swollen ankles, legs and feet and immediately had a blood test and booked an ECG for next week, but the clinician asked me to ask my Oncologist, whether cancer or chemotherapy could leave me with my oedema? (podgy ankles, feet and legs).

I have had this since the end of chemo 8 weeks ago, but it’s stable (not getting worse) for now.

History: I was on a course of six infusions of Carboplatin (of which I only had five) and now only on pain relief (gabapentin, paracetamol and morphine) and Sotalol (for my AFib). I also have a leaky Mitral valve, yes I’m a complicated wretch.

So does anyone have any experience with post chemo Oedema? Or is this a completely different kettle of fish having nothing to do with the cancer and chemotherapy.

Thanks in advance.

  • Hi  , no personal experience of oedema but it is a known side effect of chemo.  Think you are wise to get your bloods and heart checked first.

Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Hi Mr U, my husband had 10 docetaxel cycles and after 7th legs became swollen and red, especially the left. He was worried it might be a DVT so GP ordered BT. Showed he could have slight heart failure which worried him as his dad had had it. However, he was put on water tablets (Furosamide) back in June and kept his leg up when sitting at home and the swelling has now gone.  The only disadvantage of them is that, after about an hour, he's in and out of the loo for the next hour or so!  Slight smile

  • I’m wearing compression stocking’s in a lovely blue. Bit of a bugger to get on but my legs are more comfy and less swollen.
