Can this procedure be offered to someone diagnosed with PC to alleviate some symptoms or is it purely used for those with benign enlarged Prostate conditions.

  • Hi Rivelin, and welcome to the forum, I have had a TURP, about 30 months ago to alleviate symptoms caused by cancer, namely an enlarged prostate crushing my urethra, hence the need for my urethra to be opened up by the TURP,  so no  more burning feeling, straing to urinate or blockages, there are a handful of guys on here who've had the procedure, all with a cancer diagnosis and I believe we all benefited from the operation.

  • Hello

I have had one it was to open up my urethra by "shaving" the bottom off my Prostate. No pain and it worked for me. Details of the operation here:

    NHS - TURP Operation.

  • Thanks for your replies. Was this suggested by your oncologist or via your GP.

  • Hello

It was advised by my Oncologist.

If you click on my name or avatar you can read my journey. I had issues in urinating and ended up in hospital. I came out of hospital with an indwelling catheter and needed the TURP operation to open the urethra.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Definitely. The tissue removed can be a useful tool for diagnosing cancer (histology).

If you need a TURP get it done before radiotherapy as outcomes following treatment are not as successful.
