What do I ask my consultant?

Firstly, I apologise for asking something that must have been asked many times.  And secondly, I'm asking it 4 hours before a meeting I'm dreading.

I had a biopsy 3 weeks ago and today I expect to discuss the findings.

My question is simply - what do I ask the consultant today?  I woke up with ideas about life expectancy, but fully awake that seems silly.  I want to use the time well, so I'm asking for advice please.

Thank you and have a great day.

  • Hi Chris, when I went in for the same meeting post biopsy and scans etc, my one question assuming PC was there, (which it was) was… is it treatable? Good luck

  • RLS, thank you.  That's it in a nutshell.  Once I posted and calmed down, I found some advice (ok, my wife did) and it's left me with plenty to think about.

    Notebook(s) at the ready :-)

    Thanks again.

  • Hello Chris

You need to know your Gleason Score, TNM Scores and if possible a treatment plan.

Just in case that's not enough for you here's a list:

    Questions-to-ask-your-healthcare-team.

    Good luck later.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Exactly, note book at the ready, Mrs Odd Man In's ears wide open. I knew I had cancer when I received mine and still was shaking like a leaf when I was told. It sort of finalised the process thus far. Then what next and when?

I always advise. One hurdle at a time. All the best for this morning. Let's hope it is all clear, otherwise, onward with your journey.

  • Brian - thank you very much.  Gleason was on my hastily-scribbled list.  I just added TNM.  I will let the group know what was said - probably after a drink.

    Have a great day!

  • KJ911, one hurdle at a time is my mantra now. On Millibob's advice I'll push for a TNM figure. I think it will be 'worse' than I first thought, but we'll see.

Thank you for your advice and support.

    Best wishes.

  • Hi Oddman

A few clues may help IE what is your latest PSA and if available previous ones as well.

Presume u had a MRI scan , do you know what that said about potential tumour especially in terms of size

    Best wishes

  • Hi Steve, I need to fill in my cancer details on here and I will do this week (I just asked for a day off).

I had my meeting with the Urology Consultant today and my numbers are PSA 7.2, Gleason 3+4 and TNM/staging is T3b because the tumour has 'just' moved beyond the capsule (a term I only heard today).

A treatment plan is being put together and I understand the options put to me today. Mrs Odd Man In did a cracking job of note-taking and my key worker gave me a pack of stuff to read.

A bone scan in the next 2 weeks looks like the next thing.  I'll post as soon as I know what the outcome is.

It's been quite a day - and I thank everyone who has read this.  Mrs OMI and I are still smiling - I hope that lasts.

    All the best.

  • Ok Chris, so lowish stats, only thing is T3b so in the seminal vesicles although still localised

Probably with that T3b best to go for RT and HT and hopefully they can start the HT to stop in its tracks.

By the way RT and HT is just my opinion, doesn't mean it's necessarily correct

Anyway looks ok so best wishes for your treatment

  • A well deserved rest, you will wonder how you get so exhausted doing very little. You are still in the OMG phase.

Keep well and ask anything on here. It is an incredibly safe place.
