Hi

My partner was diagnosed with prostate cancer in early 2023. He underwent radiotherapy in July 2023 and then went on to a course of adjuvent hormone therapy. Early 2024 we noticed the beginnings of memory changes and after consultation with his oncologist the family concluded that the AHT may be contributing to the memory changes so he stopped taking them in June 2024. He is  having PSA tests three-monthly and only takes tamsulosin and calcium tablets. His PSA is undetectable and his testosterone is slowly rising so the cancer seems to be under control.

Sadly the memory issues have now developed into full blown dementia and my loving, lively, happy partner who sailed through radiotherapy is now a shadow of his former self. The family is devastated and wish we had known more about these side-effects at the outset.

Is the onset of dementia prevalent amongst prostate cancer sufferers?

  • Hi  , sorry to hear about your OH’s dementia.  What a good question.  While we do have a number of people on HT who have dementia I haven’t read of any confirmed link but it will be interesting to see what response your question generates.  I was put on Enzalutamide for 3 months last year and my wife describes how I changed during that time with dementia type traits, but after coming off it, about 2 months later I was back to ‘normal’.

    Best wishes, David

    Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.

  • Hello again

    Welcome to "our" little part of the Community.

    Your question made me think about my own treatment (you can read my journey by clicking on my name or avatar) and I am just back on Hormone Therapy. During the first 3 years on HT I suffered from what can only be called "brain fog" and was prone to forget things. Strange that "brain fog" isn't listed as a side effect!!

    Alzheimer's Research UK have looked into this and their answer is yes, HT can increase the risk of dementia and here's the link to their research;

    I hope this helps - lets see what others have to say.

    Best wishes - Brian.
