PSA rise linked to infection?

Hi All, my husband was diagnosed with stage 4b prostate cancer in January, PSA of 186 and Gleason 9. He’s on triplet therapy and completed chemo in July. His PSA was down to 0.05. He had flu which developed into a chest infection and then pneumonia last week and ended up being hospitalized. He just had bloods done today and his PSA is 0.07. Is this likely to be due to the infection? We’ve been fortunate that the PSA has dropped ever since the diagnosis and this is the first time it’s gone up, so I’m slightly panicking…. Thanks in advance

  • Hello Anna (

Panic not!! It could be one of may reasons for raised PSA and these are:

    * As you say infection or changes in his immune system.

    * If he's exercised or ridden a bike in the 48 hours prior to the PSA test.

    * If he's had any sexual activity in the 48 hours before the PSA test.

    * The test could have been done at a different laboratory under different conditions than the last test.

His team should be happy with those results and wouldn't normally take any action unless:

    * He has 3 consecutive rises in his test results or

    * His PSA rises by more than 2 whole points.

Relax, have a glass of wine and sit back - his team are looking after him.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thank you Brian, as always. No cycling and no sexual activity (!) but he did come out of hospital on Sunday and he’s still on antibiotics and isn’t 100% - so I’m really hoping the infection explains it…
