Hi All
When I connect the day bag to the night bag it seems to be pot luck if it works or not , sometimes you can see flow is instant and I have to set my alarm in the early hours to empty it , on other occasions such as tonight I woke up with pain in my bladder to see that it hasn’t filled at all , when I disconnected from it my leg bag filled up twice in quick succession
there is no change in how I am doing things so am baffled at why sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t , the only thing I can think of is that these day bags don’t seem to be the best of quality , on numerous occasions now i also see that the bag is empty despite the fact that I have drunk lots of water soI have to apply pressure to the tubing and manipulate the bag ,then a gush of urine will come from the catheter filling the bag up
I wrote this at 03.30 this morning , since then I changed to a new day bag and connected again to the night bag , this was now at about 06.30, I saw immediately that it was working and managed to get some sleep , when I awoke the night bag was 3/4 full, happy with that but have I got to go through this blockage/sleep lottery every night ? :(
anyone any thoughts on this as I have to say I wasn’t expecting this many issues on the catheter side of things ?
is there a better quality bag that reduces these issues ?
thanks
Nick
Hi Fantic240
sorry to hear your having problems . I would contact your medical support and ask them for help . If you’ve already done this . Your GP practice may have an incontinence nurse who deals with catheters . If they don’t phone up your local hospital as they certainly will have .
Hope you get sorted soon
best wishes

Hello Nick Fantic240
Sorry to read of your issues - I had an indwelling catheter for over 10 months (and sometimes I wish I still had it!!)
* Ensure the leg bag straps pass UNDER the pipework not over it.
* Every day if you have a foreskin pull it back and wash the area where the catheter enters the penis with cooled boiled water (however clean you are - there will be debris!).
* At night ensure that the connections between the night and day bag are firm and both taps fully open. Ensure the night bag is below the level of the leg bag.(I know simple but some folk forget ).
* It may be possible that you have already established some bladder control and instead of draining your bladder you are retaining urine and actually weeing!
I hope the above helps and you get sorted.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hi Brian
thanks so much for detailed reply
great point on Straps Under rather than over , I did actually have them over on day 1 but changed it
i also noticed that the last day bag needed constant manipulation for it to fill , you could feel your bladder was full but bag would be empty, once you moved it around a gush of urine would arrive and completely fill the bag up , I noticed when it did it yesterday it was very bloody coloured with specs of blood , up to then it had been clear , when I changed the day bag for a new one it seems to be working fine and everything is clear again although I do drink alot water so am emptying on the hour probably
one thing I’m confused about Brian is where you advise to ensure both taps are open on the day and night bag , I have only had the day bag tap open to drain into the night bag then only opened the night bag tap when emptying , is this wrong should it be left open to constantly drain into a container ?
All the best
Nick
Hi Nick (Fantic240)
I had some night bags with a tap (or none return valve) at the top which you had to open. Some of my night bags didn't have this. You are correct in emptying the night bag first thing in the morning.
It took me a couple of weeks to get used to it but once I had everything sorted it was so simple and to be honest convenient!!
You look to have the job sorted.
Best wishes - Brian.
