AXA health insurance question

Hi All. I have AXA health insurance that includes comprehensive cancer cover. I rang them today to advise of my diagnosis and they were extremely helpful. I'm not looking to claim anything in respect of PC treatment. I will rely on the NHS as that is what my very good friend and fellow cancer patient advised. They did however say that if I chose the NHS route I could claim a £50 a day allowance for when I'm having radiotherapy, up to £2000 limit per year. It looks like being weekdays for a month. So that is £1000 I will receive from AXA providing I give them the proper documentary evidence?  Do I have that correct?

If anyone can come in with experience or knowledge that would be very helpful. I no longer drive and will need to get an Uber from home to Mt Vernon each day (about £35-40 each way). This allowance would certainly soften the blow.

Many thanks.

  • Hi from fellow scottish hospital visits ,

I don’t know anything about AXA.  However , in Edinburgh you can get support from the hospital by a volunteer driver who will take you and return you home . The alternative is contact the hospital and you could possibly get a flat attached to the hospital during your RT

  • I had radiotherapy a couple of years ago while insured with AXA. My treatment at the Woolverstone Macmillan Centre at the Ipswich Hospital was excellent and I don't think the private route would have added any benefit.

I did claim the £50/day for NHS radiotherapy; just keep your treatment schedule for evidence when claiming. Claiming is pretty simple and can all be done online if you are computer savvy.

Its an interesting observation that many people take out private medical insurance to cover cancer when in reality this is the one area where the NHS does a pretty good job. I was very happy with my treatment.

Good luck with your radiotherapy. Rob

  • Thank you Liz. I will make enquiries. I have a suspicion it's better in Scotland than here (in fact the guy at AXA I spoke to was in Glasgow and made the comment). Definitely I will ask.

    All the best.

  • Thank you very much Rob for the information. Yes, that has been my observation of the NHS too.

    Best wishes.
