I concluded SBRT five weeks ago for my prostate cancer. Apparently there was a mix upsomewhere so I didn't subsequently receive a message from the hospital for a PSA test after 4 weeks so I arranged it myself in the 4th week. I am rather surprised that my PSA seems to have risen a lot since I had the SBRT treatment which seems counter intuitive. In December my PSA level was 3.68, now, after the treatment it is 6.4. (I concluded the 5 session SBRT on 27th June). Because of the communications mix up and being away in the last week of August I won't see my oncologist until early September. I have read quite a lot about PSA bounces later on, but not a lot on PSA levels in that immediate month after SBRT so I don't know if this rise is normal. Has anyone else had similar experience?
Hi Pilgrim2
just saw your post . My OH had 6 treatments of RT. His PSA went up very slightly but the next time is was deemed undetectable . He’s had another 2 PSA tests since and remain the same . Long may that continue .
If you are concerned contact your cancer specialist nurse who will chat to you about the rise . But may also offer you a quicker blood test. As worry just highlights the anxieties even more and you certainly don’t need that . If you don’t have a contact nurse speak to your GP and ask for a quicker test to eleviate you concerns
best wishes & hugs

PSA after radiotherapy changes gradually after treatment and can take up to two years to reach its lowest point (nadir). As you are so close to treatment it may be your prostate is still irritated by the radiotherapy particularly as you had SBRT which delivers a higher dose.
Monitor you PSA but don't expect instant results from radiotherapy that's not the way it works (unless you are also having hormone therapy).
Keep us posted. Rob
Hi ,
Your story sounds familiar to me , my PSA was 0.46 going into 3 sessions of SBRT , after 7 weeks had a BT and after 8 weeks had a PSMA Pet Scan .
My PSA result came back 1.68 , i was gutted as i was hoping for a 0.1 or 0.2 result. In my mind it hadn’t worked so all the days leading up to my next consultation, which was on the 31/07 i was convinced i was back to square one .
I was nervous entering the room , the doctor was great and informed me that SBRT had worked , no avid disease found in my spine .
i said to him i was confused with the rise in PSA , we talked about a bounce which i have never experienced before so I'm not a believer even thou i know others have experienced it.
We spoke that cancer is still there but hopefully it takes a long nap. I was pleased with what he said and i feel better in the last week or so .
I hope your rise has a similar outcome to mine and try not to worry as that can do your head in ..
All the Best
Tony
