Hi Peeps,
Just dropped in to have a vent. I saw a comment on Prostate Cancer UK FB page about lack of awareness in GP’s surgeries.
Well I thought I would check this out this morning as I had a 3 month PSA test. (BTW PSA is down from 7 pre prostatectomy to 0.01 18 months after.)
So after arriving in good time, I realised there is no literature or reference to Prostate Cancer at all in the Surgery.
As if that wasnt bad enough when I asked the Nurse who was about to take my blood who I should email about this she went on to tell me how GP’s don't like to take PSA test’s.
Got to say I had to choke down the rage that rose in my throat. I explained if I had not requested a PSA test when I did, I could well have been in Sir Chris Hoys position in the future.
So I have just sent a very strong worded email to the Surgery about this offering to contact Prostate Cancer UK on their behalf for posters and flyers.
If I don't get a reply I will source literature myself and go in Ninja style and put literature in place.
Us men really have to take action on this.
Deep breath, annnddddd relax.
All the best to everyone,
Psticks
Hello Psticks
It's that magic word "budget" - to do the test it takes staff time and the cost comes out of their budget!!
This NHS Blog - NHS Blog. Tells GP's to only test me over 50 who ASK for a test - if they don't know they can have one, why would they ask?
In my 3.5 years on my personal journey I have got umpteen men to be tested and have been gobsmacked at how many have joined our exclusive club - part of me thinks the Government would be unable to cope with the results of mass testing.
Keep up the good work.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hi Psticks
I totally agree, apparently our GP's weren't happy about doing PSA tests because ' they aren't reliable' but luckily for my OH, the Practice nurses decided to add the PSA test for men having an NHS MOT as part of the blood screening. Thank god for our Practice Nurses taking that initiative.
Great post! As Millibob says, most GPs will only test if a man asks for testing, we need to inform men and provide them with the information they need, putting information in GP surgeries would play a huge part in that.
I often share on Facebook and as a result had several men visit their GP and ask for testing. Referrals have gone crazy since chris hoy shared his story.....hence some people experiencing longer wait times.
My own situation is a perfect example of the GP attitude. I requested a PSA test in March 2023 but had to insist as the initial reply was that they didn't do such tests on demand although I was 74 at the time. The rest is history see my profile.
I make a point of promoting PSA testing and my own situation to anyone that I discuss PC with.
