It seems as though it was ages ago that I wrote about the plans to discharge my husband home. He is still waiting. The bed and hoist have arrived home. We are still awaiting the care to be put in place and for a wheelchair. Without one we won’t need the other - the hoisting is the issue. I have made enquires with private care agencies, just to get an idea of costs. My husband will need two carers to operate the hoist. The hospital say four visits a day…..this would cost up the £10,000 per month. I was stunned at this quote from a well advertised home care provider. Another quoted £9,600 every four weeks.
we have some savings but no where that sort of money. Surely there needs to be regulation of these services. There might be some regulation already but it is no wonder so many of these agencies close down, not many ordinary people can afford to pay those fees.
in the meantime my husband is still in hospital waiting for the two weeks NHS care they have said he can have. I’m feeling sick with worry for him. He is getting so distressed by the waiting and the whole process. To top it all off, today a Doctor asked him if he wants to be resuscitated if he becomes more unwell.
Hi Teatowel , I suppose things have moved forward but at an incredibly slow rate. The cost quoted doesn’t sound real, but I must be out of touch. Also, why does the hoist need 2 people to operate it? Perhaps some others on this site could recommend where you can go for help? Where abouts do you live?
Talking about resuscitation (DNR) is fairly standard but is often not handled very sensitively. I hope you are able to get him home soon. David
Best wishes, David
Please remember that I am not medically trained and the above are my personal views.
Hi David, thank you for your encouraging reply. I am told that The hoist need two people to operate it for health and safety. The costs quoted were from a well known company who asked me not to advertise their prices. Things are moving in the right direction, albeit slowly. hope you are doing ok? x
Sorry to hear your husband isn’t home yet. Hopefully soon .
very insensitive medics asking about a DNAR . During COVID. I received a call from our surgery and a locum just blurted it out . I just said I would prefer to discuss it with my own GP so don’t put this in place . Your husband has rights and they should have discussed it with you both and allowed you time to consider. During my working life I had to ask the same questions but did it sensitively and gave the clients and family time to mull over what the implications are . It does not mean that treatment is withdrawn as many people think . It really only kicks in if you have a catastrophic stroke / heart attack.
take care and hugs to you both

I am sorry to read that your husband is still in hospital, it must be awful for you both.
Does your husband have a social worker?you do need one. They could help with applying for care costs, and organising a care agency. Unfortunately, the cost of care is horrendous. I know only to well about this , as we have a severely disabled daughter who needs care, I do most of her care myself, however, when I tried to get help for her when my husband was diagnosed with prostate cancer, I was quoted £72 per hour, for two carers, and £40 per half hour, she would need two hourly visits morning and night, and two day calls, around £1400 a week! No way can normal income people afford that. So, I do it, and care for her, and my husband.
I do hope it won't be long now before your husband gets home.
