Hello, hope everyone is ok. Please can I ask if anyone has cirrhosis of the liver to contend with in addition to metastatic PC? It was well compensated but now ascites (fluid has accumulated. I’ve been on Google and am terrified for my husband Mike. He didn’t drink alcohol and had what I think was a reasonably healthy diet.
on top of this the urology nurse recommended our 40 yr old son getting checked. His PSA was reported normal. However, a examination showed his prostate is enlarged and he has been prescribed Tamusulosin for benign hyperplasia of his prostate. How can they be sure it’s benign. Sorry if that’s a daft question I am so upset and worried it’s one thing after another isn’t it..
Any advice would be appreciated.
with thanks
Moira
Hello Moira
Sorry to be late replying. I’ve been somewhat busy these last few weeks!
I can understand your worries about both your husband and your son and please note that my response is not from that of an expert medical professional but from the wife of a man with a strong family history of prostate cancer and from what I have gleaned from this forum.
first, your son. If there is a family history of prostate cancer then can I recommend that, to ensure early detection of any potential prostate cancer for your son that your husband undergoes genetic counselling. This is available on the NHS where there is a family history of prostate cancer or early onset breast cancer - as in my husband’s case. We were warned that there is a possibility that , potentially, there are cancer- causing genes which have not yet been discovered. For this reason, our sons are advised to have annual PSA tests ( on the NHS) and our daughters to have annual mammograms. They were all in their 40s at the time. I think, too, that you should be aware that not all prostate cancer types can be detected by PSA testing alone. Some cancers are ‘low secreting’.
so, this brings me to a second point. I am wondering whether your son and your husband have been offered MRI scans to add a bit more certainty to their diagnosis and reassurance for all of you? As we all know, the NHS is struggling with inadequate resources to cope with ever increasing demand so this might not be on offer but might it be worth asking the question?
of course, there is then the issue of ‘consent’. Your husband and/or your son might not wish to undergo the testing! One of our sons steadfastly refused to get tested! He has now ‘surrendered’ to my nagging ( or says he has to shut me up?) and tells me his PSA is ok!
