Delay with scans

In brief, my husband has metastatic bone cancer which has caused

a fractured arm. This was misdiagnosed over the phone by his GP in January as rotator cuff injury and he was referred for physio. In March he was given an x-ray whilst attending an oncology apt and the fracture was discovered. He is in a lot of pain, has to sleep sitting up and wear a sling. He saw an orthopaedic surgeon on 1st May and was told surgery is necessary. Told MRI and CT scans needed prior to next clinic apt (now booked for 22/6). He rang to chase these scans and can get no clear info that they have been requested. We have involved PALS and been very proactive in chasing apts etc, meanwhile he has excruciating hip and back pain but the oncologist won't start more cancer treatment until surgery completed.

We are getting desperate. Can anyone please suggest who we contact to get things moving? We don't know where to turn and he is in so much pain.

  • Hello  . You are having a torrid time of it. If you have exhausted the normal routes like the CNS, the orthopaedic surgeon who wants the scans, the oncologist, PALS and the radiology department then the next stage is the Integrated Care Board- see link.

Write a concise letter to them but copy it in to all the other people involved as well as your local MP. Stress that your husband is in a lot of pain which is adversely affecting his quality of life.

Have you got a local hospice near you - they are there to help do things like manage pain and are not just for end of life. Also do you have a Maggie's? Have you called the Macmillan help line on 0808 808 00 00 to see if they have any suggestions?

  • Hello

I am with  here. Your MP needs to be involved if you have been through all the other avenues.

Mention cancer, pain, delays and anxiety and things should move for him.

I had issues over 12 weeks with Mrs M and at the end I e-mailed my MP. She was scanned, medicated, and discharged with the equipment she needed within 24 hours.

    Best wishes-Brian.
