I have had my operation to remove my prostate 12 days ago. I have noticed the last two days that there appears to be still blood clots or debris in my urine when it is going into my bag from my catheter. Is it normal for this to be happening this length of time afterwards especially as I have finished my course of blood thinners.
Hello Jumping Jack
I am sorry to read your post and hope you are well after the surgery. I still have my Prostate but my understanding is that after surgery you can still have "blood clots and debris" in your urine for up to 8 weeks after the operation. This is because the surgery is healing inside and the wounds are returning to normal and the old clotted blood is being removed.
If you are still worried by this or the amount of blood and debris being discharged have a word with your clinical team.
Best wishes - Brian.

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to me and explaining that blood clots/debris is normal for up to 8 weeks. I have only noticed 1clot per day for the last 2 days and my urine is pretty clear and no sign of blood in the urine (apart from the aforementioned). I don't think it have drunk so much water in all my life since the operation.
I've been reading your profile, it sounds like you've been on quite a journey. Im glad your doing well
Hi Jumping Jack
I had no blood or clots in my bag, but I did have a few small clots and a few days with some blood in my urine about 4 weeks after surgery. I messaged the hospital and talked to a nurse and she said it was fairly normal for up to 2 months after surgery and I should only worry if there was pain or the quantity increased or there were additional signs of infection (cloudy or whiffy).
That eased my mind and it did go away after a few days. There is so much replumbling and cuts going on down there, that during the healing, scabs can flake off and minor bleeds can occur.
So unless you are experiencing discomfort (above and beyond the “normal” after surgery) or infection symptoms, it all sounds fine. But if it carries on or intensifies, definitely give the hospital and nurses a call. That definitely gave me peace of mind.
Wishing you all the best on your recovery journey!
Thank you. Millibob said the same kind of thing and that debris can float out for up to 8 weeks. Apart from that my urine looks pretty clear and doesn't smell so I think I'm all good
