Tiredness

Despite walking twice a day with our two dogs, doing exercises through the day, renovating my shed/ workshop I am constantly feeling tired, want to lie down and sleep, I'm a year into my hormone treatment with the third injection just two weeks away.

Will this tiredness, lethargic feeling, go away of us that just part of PC?

While I'm active it seems to fade away but when I stop an overwhelming desire to sleep overcomes me.

If I do sleep during the day I don't sleep all that well at night.

Do others experience this?

  • Hi Safeways,

I'm 18 months into HT and I feel very much the same. As you say, it's a bit better during exercise, but I can only do that for about 30 minutes due to reduced stamina. I do have naps several times a day when the tiredness gets too much, and I don't sleep well at night.

I did find heavy weight lifting helps, I train at the gym twice a week with heavy weights and don't need as many naps on these days. It also helps overall muscle retention which is an issue with HT.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi Safeways,

It's that old conundrum when you feel tired during the day whether to have a nap or not, especially if it affects your sleep that night.

It's always a pain in the a**e when you can't sleep at night, so I made a point of not napping during the day when I felt tired but instead did something to keep my brain active or did a little light exercise such as a quick walk around the garden.  This was on top of my daily activities & served me well.

Once you have finished your HT, things should return more to normal with less tiredness / lethargy, however, it's a natural process the older we get.

    Best Wishes

  • Thanks for the replies, this time last year I had my first hormone injection, then in November getting my second one and starting radiotherapy,

Before this I could lift 30kg easily but that has changed, I now struggle with 20kg, some days even less. I walk and exercise but that hasn't stopped the muscle loss.

I went from 11 stone, my weight for most of my adult life, down to 9stone, I've  tried to put weight on but it just appears as fat around  my waist, I no longer run with the dogs which I used to enjoy immensely.

But still look forward to everyday, everyone tells me it will get better but at the moment I do find it hard.

We have a monthly Macmillan/Maggie's  cancer support group that helps a lot.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

I just read your profile and post. Jacob, my husband is exactly your age and on HT for 19 months now. Yes, the tiredness and fatigue is the main issue. Like you, he is very active, starting the day really early, swim every morning etc but come 1pm he is so very tired. He does take an afternoon nap which he will not be able to coop without. I think indeed the treatment is a choice but the way we see it, it keep you alive. Quality of life is still good, we just came back from holiday and it was involved lots of traveling. We look now on the half full and enjoy what is possible. We have a beautiful spring weather and looking forward for a long summer!

    Lots of love

  •   the "Hormone fat Belly" does eventually go once you are off the Hormones.

As Buzzers said about the tiredness:

Once you have finished your HT, things should return more to normal with less tiredness / lethargy, however, it's a natural process the older we get.

I know my stamina got up and left me the same time as my libido, not to mention getting the gift of E.D.  Not being a naturally fit person I do try to walk as much as I can (with my walking stick, at my own pace).

The Maggie's Prostate Group I go to still really helps, there are about 20+ regulars now and we are all at different levels.  It feels good to be able to offer help or advice from personal experiences to newly diagnosed men.

  • My OH has proved me and a lot of others wrong as he continues to walk and do the gym at least 3 times a week  ( stubborn) but does have a nap when needed. He asked the Oncologist if he could still scuba dive . If you think you are fit enough go for it . This was him yesterday and OMG he was elated . Not bad for a nearly 74 yr old.
last night we had a celebratory dram for him and a vino for me.

send the oncologist a postcard saying thank you with this picture.

My problem what’s his next bucket list as he said this isn’t going to beat me.

  • Enjoy your holiday and just keep your fingers crossed for what he decides to do next.

  • Wow, I would take my hat off to your OH, but I don't wear a hat!  Amazing!!

I did a trial dive in Greece about 20 years ago, thought it was great.  One of my favourite memories is of the Red Sea in Egypt, snorkelling and looking down through the clear waters, seeing all of the brightly coloured fish and divers swimming along under the water (naturally).

  • My husband has completed three years of 6 monthly HT injections, during which time he has continued to try to complete his 10k per day.  He has suffered dreadful hot flushes and bouts of fatigue, but has said he’s now beginning to feel a lot better.  The occasional, really frightening, collapses from breathlessness, whether due to PC treatment, asthma or blood pressure, seem to also  be getting less frequent.

  • Hello, a big thing which has helped me recently are B12 supplements administered either via injection or tablets really help with combatting fatigue. I have found that my body has adjusted a little more to my treatments over last two years, I wish you well

    Regards
