Hi everyone,
My OH will finish his 6 months HT at the end of October and he is having his 20 sessions of radiotherapy in August. He is 57, stage T3a, gleason 3+4 and PSA 5.6 to add some context.
I am thinking of booking a week in Fuerteventura for the 1st week in December to give us something to look forward to after all the treatment.
Do you think this would be okay - I am just wondering about side effects of the treatment & if he will feel well enough to travel by then.
Advice would be hugely welcome.
Thanks
Hello Redrose25
I can't see any problem in a holiday in December when his Radiotherapy has been completed in August/September. .
Any side effects from Radiotherapy usually clear up a couple of weeks after the final fraction - apart from fatigue I didn't have any at the end of my treatment!
Go get something booked!!
Best wishes - Brian.

Hello Redrose25 . That sounds like a brilliant idea. The recommendation is not to fly for 4 or 5 weeks after radiotherapy as your husband will be at a greater risk of DVT but it also gives time for the pelvic area to settle down (assuming that he may have some side effects in the first place). The hormone therapy is no bar to travelling. Others can advise you on Travel insurance (I can't because I don't have personal experience but Brian Millibob does.
Ah Alwayshope , I wasn't going to mention travel insurance as he's only on 6 months HT so technically when he travels he's off treatment!!
However since you did mention it just to remind everyone we do have a travel insurance forum - here's the link:

Personal experience - I travel to the Asian part of Turkey a few times a year and the best value cover and price I can find is with a Company - Insurancewith and I have an annual worldwide policy with them.
Best wishes - Brian.

Redrose25 the holiday would do both of you "the world of good" (is that a proper saying?).
In my case it took a few months for the fatigue to clear up a bit. Mine was in the middle of covid so I couldn't go anywhere if I had wanted.
I'm making up for it now though.
When your OH gets his Radiotherapy he might not get any side effects, it changes from person to person.
As long as you are there for him, what more can he ask for!!

Redrose25 I had been in HT for eleven months prior to ending my 20 sessions of RT, I was then on HT for a further six months after that.
At the review meeting with the RT team at the end of my RT I asked about travel and was told that they didn't recommend flying for six weeks after the end of treatment but as we were going into Europe in a motor caravan and had all toilet etc. facilities onboard three weeks delay was plenty.
As for insurance, we were with Nationwide via their Flex account (Aviva Insurance). I spoke to them about my situation and they charged me an extra £110 for most of my twelve month insurance with them, i.e. max of 31 days per visit.
You can read all of my rather protracted journey to date in my profile by clicking on the 'MAN' Avatar at the top left of this comment.
However you must remember that as we are all different, your OH may have different side effects to any of us so how life pans out for you both could be easier or more difficult. But I would advise booking the holiday to give you both something to look forward to and keep your spirits high.
May I wish you both all the very best, once the treatment is over you will have something to look forward to hopefully wondering what all of the anguish was about, most of us have!

Redrose25 just picture the scene, you and your OH, abroad somewhere nice and warm and sunny, sitting on a balcony drinking a bottle of Wine (or something else).
That was me and my partner last week In Sorrento. Bliss!!!
The Radiotherapy will be behind you both and you will be able to look to the future.
Keep us posted with you and your OH's journey.
Take Care
