HI all I have a few nightmare days with pain in chest and under arm. turns out i've got  shingles.

Are you more susceptible to this if you have prostate cancer.  thank you in advance

  • Hi  . That can be very painful. I have done a literature search and have found one study which indicates that men with prostate cancer on ADT had a higher incidence of shingles.

In particular, incidence rates of HZ per 100 person-years were 2.36 (95% CI: 1.75-3.13) and 1.24 (95% CI: 0.81-1.81), respectively, for patients with PC who had and those who had not received ADT.

Shingles can be triggered in people who have had chicken pox by stress or if they are immunocompromised but also it can just spontaneously develop but it seems to be more prevalent as you get older.

There has been a drive to vaccinate the older population in the UK but at the moment it is only for those between 70 and 79 plus those over 50 who are severely immunocompromised. I think that a live vaccine is used so anyone who is thinking of having it and about to start radiotherapy or chemotherapy should check with their doctor about timing.

  • Hi DJ manic,

Best tip I was given many (many) years ago by my doctor when I had shingles was to add a capful of Dettol when having a bath.  Not sure why it helped, but it did make things a lot more manageable.

Hope you make a quick recovery.

    Best Wishes

    Brian

  • Thank you its very painful.  Since starting  ht I've had a lot of problems.  Thank you for your reply

  • Thank you Brian will give it a go. Its so painful

  • Have you spoken to your doctor. You might be eligible for antivirals but you need to start them soon.

  • Last Christmas Eve ended up at doctors as had severe internal pain throughout the night,  it turned out to be shingles, unbeknown to me at the time the doctor did a PSA test which obviously led me here, when I got cancer diagnosis I went back to the doctor to ask why he did the PSA and was it connected to the shingles and he said not, in-fact he told me he couldn’t remember why he did the PSA

  • I tried to see Dr on Friday  could not get into see anyone.  They had a locum  on. So I've been in pain  killers till I try again tomorrow

  • They tried me on anti virals but didn’t work as you literally have to be on them at the very beginning, I noticed that my pain changed after 2 days from the horrendous internal stabbing to a more manageable surface pain, could only describe it as like having a gravel rash graze, 400 mg ibuprofen seemed to keep it in check and it lasted about 2 weeks , hopefully yours should start to ease up soon Thumbsup

  • Thank you its the pain as you said. I'm on painkillers and it eases it. You soon know when they are wearing off. Thanks for your reply  all the best to you too
