Hi

my husband is having problems with mobility after having radiotherapy (20 sessions)and hormone therapy, injections and medication. He has difficulty walking, numbness in legs and generally has slowed down a lot. would be very interested to know if anyone of you on this forum have had similar problems. He has been to see a neurologist and now has to get a brain scan. He has suggested Parkinson’s. We have just discovered another gentleman who lives near us has had the same problem and he’s been told it’s the radiotherapy that has damaged nerves in his spine. Any information would be much appreciated.

  • Hi  , I have not come across this before as a side effect of RT but possible.  I guess you need to see the results of the scan to determine if it is neurological or physiological. David

  • Hello

Thank you for your post. I am so sorry to read of your husband's problems. like  above I haven't come across this before although in the information given to me before my radiotherapy one side effect was "joint & muscle stiffness".

I would encourage you to continue to press your team/GP to try and get to the direct cause of this problem. In the meanwhile I hope this link will help:

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello  . I think that it depends on where the radiotherapy is targeted. It can cause 'bruising' to the tissues especially if this was within the treatment field but would normally subside within a few weeks. If your husband has spinal mets or the cancer is near the spinal column then it might be a temporary problem. Remember none of us are medically trained but I came across this when looking for peripheral neuropathy and numbness.

    • Prostate cancer, which may cause numbness in the feet and legs from tumors pressing on the spinal cord

My husband did slow down during and after his 33 sessions of radiotherapy but didn't have any numbness.

He has also slowed down a lot since he has been on hormone therapy and he does 'shuffle' to the point where it is safer for him to use a seat walking frame with wheels. This allows him to walk further faster plus he can sit down when he feels like it. Neuropathy is a reported side effect with some forms of hormone therapy such as Apalutamide and Enzalutamide. I hope it is only a temporary problem for your husband but if not then there are things which can help.
