Tomorrow is my six weeks post op appointment with the surgeon who did my prostatectomy. What should I be listening out for so I can ask the right questions.

Please feel free to list the questions I should be asking him because when I get into the room I will probably go totally blank.

  • Well I would suggest writing your questions down and also what you are told. I have a dedicated shorthand type pad for all matters associated with PC. You need to know the lab results. Hopefully that will be Clear Margins. The resultant actual classification of cancer found in the prostate. How th op went and what the surgeon actually carried out and his thoughts on what he found and did. Your current PSA result. The frequency of future monitoring PSA tests and where they should be carried out. Future options for further treatment if unfortunately that is required. What additional assistance is available to you, if it is needed - incontenence, ED, councelling, therapy, etc., your future main contact - probably a CNS.

  • Hi and thanks for your response.

That seems a lot of questions to ask. But I know that they are all relevant, so hopefully he'll be kind enough to sit and listen and be able to a swer my questions.

  • Hi

hope your taking someone with you as you go into mental overload with information . Totally agree write down what you want to ask . But I would give the medic a copy and they may just go down your list .  If you don’t understand something tell that you didn’t understand and ask for a simpler explanation .

best wishes and keep us updated .

  • Hi  A

Probably the most important points are  Dr, as far as your know did u get rid of the cancer completely and when can I have a PSA test

PSA needs to show near zero,  if it does great news although obviously further PSA needed to ensure cancer gone for good.

    Good luck

  • Hi. All went well today. Great results all round. Cancer gone, PSA undetectable and a surgeon prepared to spend time explaining using terminology I could understand.

  • Brilliant, just the news you wanted to hear.
