I had RALP surgery just before Christmas and all seemed to go well. I had a great consultant have had next to no leaking (not wearing pads at all) and have started running fairly hard with no issues. I was advised I could cycle at around 7 weeks and did 30 mins each way to work. In the evening there was a lot of blood in my urine and I passed out when I went to the bathroom during the night. in the morning in felt fine and no blood in urine. I did feel I also set myself back a bit with erections that were starting to happen. I’ve not been back on the bike since but will try again this week, Erections have kind of started again ant around 70% but short lasting. Any advice on what I should and shouldn’t do in regards to riding and is this damaging to nerves?

  • Hi  , my instant reaction is talk to your team for advice.  The passing out sounded like you had lost a large amount of blood. Personally go and get advice on this asap. David

  • Yeah, was a bit of a shock but the clinic didn't' seem too worried as there was no blood in the morning. I was advised to ease back and go to A&E if it happens again. I'm prone to low blood pressure and was a probably a bit dehydrated, it's happened a few times in the past pre-diagnosis and I've been OK since. I cycled into work this morning and everything seemed fine. I am still unsure if this will impact ED recovery.

  • Hi

I've got my 6 week review on Thursday and cycling is on my list of things to discuss.  I've heard conflicting advice concerning how long I should leave it before jumping back on the bike.

My surgeon did say I should seek out a prostate friendly saddle.  Have you used one or were you using your normal saddle?

  • I had my RALP in August last year. Uneventful recovery but the surgeon advised me not to get on a bike or motorbike for a year! At my first post op review a second surgeon, not Consultant, felt 3 months was sufficient! I'm planning a return to both, gradually, from next week.

    • I had left side nerve sparing and as yet no unassisted actions in that department. That part is delicate surgery hence the advice to be cautious when in a saddle. I've bought a saddle without a nose so it hopefully won't cause any issues.
  • My saddle has a split down the middle, I've not had any discomfort when riding. I did a commute yesterday, about 30k round trip, and not noticed any ill effects. I'm probably going to limit it to once a week for the next month.
