Travelling Abroad with Prostate Cancer -- Insurance.

I'm 77 (almost 78) and just had a prostate cancer diagnosis about 10 weeks ago.
I'm already in stage 4 and have already had my 3rd 4-weekly Degarelix injection and have just now been 2 weeks on 2 X Abiraterone tablets daily.

Was looking to go to Spain for a week in summer so I've just done an online "Get Quote" for travel insurance and received quotes from only 2 insurers.
Declared my 'usual conditions' plus the prostate cancer and the "cheaper" quote was £3.609.55.

My eyes are still watering!

Just wondering what other P.C. sufferers do about travel insurance for travelling abroad?

Thanks in advance for any input.

  • Hi BAKsteel,

Welcome to the group although sorry to find that you have had cause to join.

There is another forum specifically related to travel insurance which you may find of interest (sorry, I'm not very good with adding links, but I'm sure others will be along shortly who will be able to.  Whilst many of the companies have web sites where you can input details, you may find it easier to give them a ring to discuss your particular circumstances.

  • Hello Brian (

Great answer - here’s the link

Travel insurance forum for cancer patients

I have Prostate Cancer and also a worldwide travel insurance policy. The answer is to ignore the online forms and telephone each company for a quote as the online forms all use the same algorithm. The best price for me was with “insurancewith” and their service was great.

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can do anything else for you.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Tell me about travel insurance,  on top of my prostate cancer i have high blood pressure also waiting to see a consultant to decide if I need surgery on my spinel channel that's causing damage to my nerves.

Tride to get some quotes,  no one will touch me at the moment,  doesn't always pay being honest but would be a dangerous gamble in my condition,  so looks like good old sunny UK again this year

  • I suggest you also try albert & eddie, they are part of Travel Insurance Facilities Plc, as are Insurancewith.

With all due respect to millibob, they do actually use a different algorithm than most other travel insurers although it is often useful to 'phone them for a quote to make absolutely sure you're answering their questions correctly.

I have recently taken out a worldwide annual policy with them at a lower cost than Insurancewith but still with the same base policy wording.

  • Hello Derek

With all due respect to millibob,

Thank you for that - it's not a problem. Every day having the Community Champs hat on is a school day and I am happy to be corrected if I am wrong!! (Mrs Millibob does it on a regular basis).

My policy comes up for renewal in September so i have made a diary note. Thanks for the tip.

This is what the Community is about - helping others.

    kind Regards - Brian.

  • Hi, BAKsteel, in 2023 my husband of 75 yrs was on the same treatment path as you (Gleason 9).  He was quoted about £1300 by Saga for a ‘one off’ insurance.  He then tried InsuranceWith and was quoted £250 (including large discount for first time customer).  Last year he phoned them for a new quote and made the mistake of telling them that he’d had a short bout of nervous asthma when he was about five.  That put it up to almost £400 for some reason (no discount of course).  We didn't shop around as we'd been satisfied with them the previous year.

Both times he actually spoke to a person and was on the phone for almost an hour while she quizzed him on his medical history.   We’ve found that completing online questionnaires results in a ridiculously high quote.  Not surprised your eyes watered!
