Ending Prostap HT - how long for a return to some degree of normality?

I have been on Prostap now since late September 2023 and will be seeing my consultant next week after 20 fractions of RT back in late July / early August.

I am due for my next 3 month implant today which will take me to 15th January before the next one. I am hoping that my consultant will say that this one today will have been my last as it is my records that I was to be on HT for six months from the end of RT. Unfortunately I don't know in advance of the consultation what my current PSA level is as the won't tell me over the phone but the last one recorded was in April at 0.53ug/L.

My question to those with knowledge and experience is. How long (on average) should I expect before I can at least to feel a bit more like a man?

  • Hi Osca2023

I can't comment specifically on Prostap, but I finished my RT October 23 when I stopped having to take Bicalutamide tablets & was also on Decapeptyl for 9 months (so 3 x 3 monthly injections) & had my final injection last December.

It was about 4 months after the last injection that I started having erections again & within another month my libido had returned as well & the shrinkage was no more.  Only thing is that I now have a dry ejaculation (which I understand can be caused by the RT - time will tell if that changes) but still very similar sensations.

    Hope that is of help

    Best Wishes

  • Thank you Brian, that is very encouraging news.

As you will know if you've followed me through my journey I have had a very uneventful and trouble free time but the side effects of the HT are beginning to get to me a bit. Luckily for me I have the most understanding wife (54th anniversary next week) who supports me wonderfully.

I am just hoping that my consultant is happy with me coming off the HT asap.

  • I had prostrap for a total of 9 months 6 months before RT and 3 months after RT.  As a rule of thumb my Oncologist told me to expect to have some of the side effects for a further 9 months - though they will lessen in severity before that.  For me everything was back to normal within that time.

  • Thanks  your comments are much appreciated, I hope I will be in a similar situation.

  • Hi

I was on Prostap for 2 years, I was told it would take 2 years to get out of my system. Reckon it was, although I don't believe I'm back to where I was pre PC - I am older though!

  • Hi  (Stuart),
Thanks for your reply, Having read through your profile I see that I was lucky to have started my PC journey from a slightly better point than you.
My journey through the RT was very smooth with very little side effects although as I say above the HT which I have been on for twelve months (had my last implant yesterday so will be on it for a minimum of fifteen months) is becoming a bit trying.
Dare I be cheeky and ask how we vary in age, I'm 76 next month.

    Regards,

    Rod

  • Hi Rod,

I was Prostap , had my last one in June and around October I started to notice side effects were not as severe, then in November it got to the afternoon and I said to myself ‘ I’ve not had a hot flush ‘ which was brilliant, if I remember correctly I had a little drink in celebration. If you’re the same , by February, March you could be clear …

    good luck best wishes

    Tony

  • Thanks  , if my consultant is happy for yesterday's implant to be my last I hope that my experiences are very similar to yours.

  • Hi Rod

    I was diagnosed when I was nearly 64 - I will be 69 in a months time.

RT was, for me, pretty straightforward. The only problem I has was when I ignored the dietary advice at Christmas lunch 2019.

  • I have seen my Oro-Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist today who reports that my last PSA test figure was un-detectable and that all other blood test results were normal.
It was also agreed that my Prostap implant of last Wednesday would be my last. Hooray!

I now just hope the future PSA tests figures remain as low except perhaps a little 'bounce' as the HT ends. Then some slow return to normality in the spring of 2025 which will be just two years from the start of this journey.

I have updated my profile to reflect this consultation and correct a few wrong dates that had crept into it.
