Hello lovely people , my question for tonight regarding dads prostate cancer / bone metastasis
can people give me some foods I can try my dad with while he is waiting for possible treatment
I’ve tried him with
toast , beans , crumpets , kfc ,happy meal , shakes from Asda
yoghurts , crisps
he isn’t enjoying anything to be honest and I’m struggling to get him to eat to be honest
I think he is enjoying something and then he will say “ this will make me go to the toilet now” or before he’s even looked at it he will say “ I wilL be sick “
now I’m not saying he won’t be but he should be atleast trying as you all no I’m putting alot of effort into my dad
from peoples own views and real life prostate cancer journey could anyone give me any tips on how I can get him to eat more
he’s drinking loads of tea and he will have atleast 2 jugs of water per day so he’s having fluids
at the moment I’ve been going to the Bakery and trying to leave a sandwich for him and a pack of plain crisps sometimes he will actually eat it but other times it’s a no !
I’m honestly thinking anything down him right now is going to be good !
I’ve got him some cheese today in little cubes to try and some fruit but i doubt he will have it ….
tomorrow is a new day
I think a lot of this is mind over matter he is in a depressed way so I’m thinking from previous experience when I was once depressed when I had a nervous breakdown I didn’t eat either , but I’m a big girl , my dad can’t afford to loose anything
thankyou again

Appetite is something as you know that comes and goes.
I suppose the steroid pills would force the appetite to be more active, but that’s a matter for a GP or other Doctor to evaluate. But you should ask the GO anyway, he can help.
As well as that when I was struggling to eat I would baulk at a large plate-full or bowl-full of anything, so little gifts of food treats would be all I wanted.
I didn’t loose much weight and over time I’ve put it all back on and more. Patience and smaller portions will help.
Sorry I can’t be more help
good luck
What’s steroid pills ? Is that treatment or just steroids to help him eat ?
thankyou
Steroids have been given to me for strength when I was weak but the side effect is an increased appetite.
It’s a tool that can be used both ways but mainly to give you the strength you’ve lost by treatments or wearing out generally.
Good luck
Yeah he’s definitely worn out maybe due to depression and just lack of motivation , this is from a man who was so fit didn’t drink smoke eat bad food always took so much pride in his body ! It’s mental to see what either the cancer is doing to him or the mental state he’s got himself into no motivation at all , stays in bed can’t get him out of bed , he’s even refusing a shower at the moment it’s sad very sad ! But I try my best I’m there every single day offering him cups of tea making sure his washing is done and really trying to fill him in on what’s going on in the real world , he’s got a car sat outside doing nothing , says he hopes he can drive again , he’s gone from 12 stone to 10 but you can see each day how weak he is getting , he snacks on nuts but that’s only a good day , I try and push tea as much as I can but again hit and miss , the other day he ate Chinese but didn’t eat 2 days after that said he felt sick , now weather that’s part of thks journey or it’s depression I don’t no , but like I keep telling him if he doesn’t get out of bed and start moving he’s going to be absolutely buggered !! Again this is a man who went to the gym every single day and I think because he’s looked after his body so much it’s maybe helping in some way
he’s been in bed for 14 weeks now , it’s draining I’ve tried eveything and I’m starting to loose my patience slightly, but I feel sorry for him
I hear your frustration and wish for his appetite to come back.
It felt like my stomachs shrank for a while and I was very picky. I also remember eating well one day and eating nothing for days after.
Is he constipated?
If he is the GP will need to be asked to intercede because of two stone weight loss and his terrible appetite. Force the issue and get an answer from the GP, or oncologist.
But look after yourself and take five when you can. You need to be strong for the fight with the GP and Dad. I’m standing beside you and giving you some of my strength to fight the good fight.
I wish I could give you a hug, and tell you you’re doing all you can.
Good luck
Hello Disneyland,
I'm no nutritional expert but here's a few thoughts of mine which may help your dad whilst he has no appetite (all too common a symptom whenever anyone isn't feeling well).
Small & often is a good start. A plateful of something can be so off putting. Soups will help with keeping hydration levels up as well as providing nutrients, good ones to try are vegetable or chicken. Eggs are also great so maybe a small amount of scrambled egg will be welcome.
Even some foods that are normally classed as a no no may tempt him - I'm thinking ice cream or custard or even biscuits.
You mention he is drinking lots of tea - does he take sugar in it as this would at least give him a little energy.
I'm sure others will be along with more sensible ideas shortly.
Finally, make sure you are looking after yourself as well.
Best Wishes
Brian
No he doesn’t have suger in his tea , he’s weak it’s a shame but he just doesn’t fancy anything I’m offering and exhausting
