PSA results

I have been receiving 3 monthly PSA checks since surgery on 27/01/2023. All results up to today's have been to low to record at the laboratory. Unfortunately I was told during my appointment today by the Nurse Specialist it had risen to 0.9. She went on to explain that if it rose th 1.0 we may have to consider radiotherapy. Next check in 2 months time. Feeling a little low now as I was hoping it was in check. Not wanting to tell family or friends the latest at the moment. I realise others in the 'club' are perhaps having more serious issues and feel selfish.

  • Hi Cuthbert. I had my surgery 28/09/22 and I had supposidly zero margins. My 3 monthly readings have however been 0.1 each time. I was told after 4.5 months that I would have a Cat scan if it rose to 0.4. I have seen others on this forum who have had scans at a lower reading (I believe 0.2). I did query this with my CNS but the response was that the accuracy of the scan at those levels is not adequately accurate. I am just wondering how beneficial a scan would be for you and whether it would be prudent for you to have one at this stage . Perhaps others who have more knowledge on the matter will respond (I assume your result was 0.9 and not 0.09??).

  • Thanks for your reply. I will see if after my next PSA check early in December whether to investigate with my Nurse Specialist if it might be useful to have a further scan. I also have hypertension,  high cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.

  • Hello

I am sorry to read of your issues, but let me re-assure you that you are in good hands and it's better to be safe than sorry. PSA tests aren't always 100% and I am in agreement with  that another scan may well be the best course of action. (No doubt it will be cost that makes the NHS refuse this!!).

Radiotherapy isn't a bad thing and if there are traces of the cancer (from the prostate bed or lymph nodes?) it will be no bad thing to have the cancer cells "zapped".

I wish you well - please keep us posted with your progress - we are all with you on this journey.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks for you message. Feeling better today. I will discuss with the Nurse in December.
