Bone Pain

Hi There

Just joined and will post intro later
I had my first chemo treatment last Thursday (Docetaxel) for stage 4 prostate cancer that has spread to the bones and lymph nodes

A day after I had it I got a sudden sharp pain in my left ribs like I had been punched.  It was a dull ache before whichI could live with
Pain is still intense so I'm taking codeine but don't like taking it for too long because of the effect I has on me.

I called the 24 hour helpline who advised calling the GP for an appointment so that someone could look at me.
Saw the GP and the pain is in an area that is not on the bone scan I had due to the scan only showing the front and rear of the skeleton and not the sides

I was advised to call the oncology dept which I'm going to do at 9am but thought I'd post here as well to see if anyone has any advice re pain management.

It hurts like being stabbed if I sit down, lie down, sit up or stand up so it's pretty constant.  If I dont move it's OK but as soon as I move - Wham
There is no sensation of it starting to hurt a bit if I move slowly it just comes on like flipping a switch.

Any advice?

  • Glad to know that we are not the only ones who keep things like this.  6 years ago when we moved to this house we decided to throw out all those old plugs we had taken off old appliances and kept as now most things come with moulded plugs!  Yes the AppleMac is good I know a lot of friends who work from home have upgraded to an AppleMac.

  • Yes,  the radio was brilliant - I think it was repeated a few years ago again and I listened to it then.  The TV show also good.  I know Hollywood and most American's do not understand the nuances of British Humour - We have a son living in America and his partner and children do not get a lot of the things we joke about.  In fact when we are together as a family and the banter is flowing they sort of sit around with a shocked look on their faces as they think we are serious - which makes things even funnier!

  • Hi

I tried a couple of things for pain, acupuncture, Chinese wood lok, and voltarol patches, all help with pain, ibuprofen to my mind is like an across the counter penicillin. I take co codormol or if the pain is very bad tramadol, the latter can space you out though.

Its finding the right balance for yourself, hopefully your cancer team or doctors will be doing this.

    Stay safe

    Joe

  • Thanks for the info.
I tried Voltarol gel whenI went to bed but when I woke up I felt dizzy for hours afterwards so not a good solution
Ibuprofen gel works OK(ish) but not as good as Voltarol
I cant take Ibuprofen as I'm on anticoagulants and Iburofen can cause internal bleeding so it's not a good idea
Codeine and paracetamol work well (Two paracetamol and 2 codeine) but leave me spaced out if I take enough to kill the pain.
I was told by the GP that Tramadol would do the same.

I'm caught between a rock and a hard place as I still need to work and cant if I take enough painkillers to work as I'm too spaced out.

It's getting a bit wearing after 6 days

  • When I was first diagnosed and before any treatment I was put on Tramadol then Morphine at 40mg day raised to 60mg day. I do still have some pain, but generally easily dealt with by exercises or paracetamol. It doesn't seem to interfere with my abilities, although getting in and out of bed can be naughty for a minute or two.  After chemo, steroids and radiation, I'm now on Firmagon which does cause problems with hot flashes and fatigue. I can work for about 4 hours then need a proper rest/sleep for an hour. Maybe a chat with GP or pain management specialist would be worthwhile as you need a strategy rather than a DIY trial.

Are you confident with your GP or should you think of a second opinion? I had the signs and symptoms of PC years ago; wrote them down and went to (locum) GP with the list. I tried to tell her that I was sure they were signs of the same thing, but she told me she would only deal with the first item on the list and to make another appointment as she hadn't had lunch. I went back twice and saw a locum both times. One offered testosterone and sildenaphil and the third thought that depression was the cause. I gave up until the pain became too much and went back to the surgery where my current (not a locum) GP saw me and immediately ordered X ray and scans. I have faith in this gentleman.

    Best of luck

  • I hope that your pain has now gone or at least greatly reduced

  • After 8 days of sharp stabby pain in has changed to dull achey pain

im hoping this is a good sign

paracetamol on its own is working well so fat

  • Good to hear. Let's hope it fades.

  • Day 16 and it's still an achey pain.
Controlling it OK with paracetamol and a heat pad
Even managed to take the bike out for a little ride yesterday which was good for my mental health ;-)
Next Chemo session is on Thursday

  • Glad that you are finding something to help you.  Mention this to the nurses at your next session and see if they have any tips for you.
