Diets and exercise

I have advanced Prostate which has escaped to my spine and various other bones. Started hormone treatment and shortly to start Chemotherapy with potential Radiotherapy. When reading the side effects of which there are many as I am sure you are all aware. There are two which I'm hoping somebody can give me input on.

Reduction in calcium leading to brittle bones, my specialist nurse stated no excersize that could result in injury or broken bones as highly unlikely they would repair. This brings me to the point of this posting. I understand that the lack of testosterone is the root cause, but also the food for the cancer. As an aside in my initial research I was surprised to see Brazil nuts have the potential to increase testosterone whilst looking for foods that might help, so they are off the menu.

But there are many nuts and foods that can increase calcium. My intention is to change my diet to take advantage of these foods. Plus all the exercise I can manage which I believe also helps bone density. Does anybody have experience or information related to this, for example will the treatments listed above still prevent calcium absorbing any and all detail.would be appreciated, this is one thing I have control over

  • I’m not speaking from any medical knowledge here but, does vitamin D help the bones if they risk being weakened by hormone therapy?

  • Hi Paul

Me again!! My G P has put me on a "diet" of Calcium and Vitamin D tablets. I had to ask for the prescription and the information to ask came from another helpful member of the Community. HT does make the bones more susceptible to breakages.

Most GP's, mine included do not understand the PC/HT effects on the body.

    I hope this helps.

    Brian.

  • Hi Brian

Great ill speak with my Urology nurse tomorrow, as you know just moved to Wales but hospital in England. Currently the nurse writes to my doctor advising on what needs to be done, as the hospital can't provide prescription direct. Let you know how I get on, again thanks for help and support

    Regards Paul

  • Hi Paul

You can get from the doctors a calcium tablet called Alca D3 this helps strengthen the bones, I’ve been taking it about six months after I finished chemo ( maybe a little less ) excersize is good keeps your joints moving, I joined ‘can do’ for a year free membership to your local council gym pool etc, I went every day up till covid.
Diet wise fish, white meats wholemeal bread cut down on the sweet stuff, Richmond biscuits is ok, you do have to have some red meat now and then keeps the iron in your blood. For drinks pomegranate juice is the best for us or diet fizzy drinks in proportion. To keep my PSA down I take a vitamin called Pomi T took it for years still do, not certain if it still works but I have lots of tablets so it’s a regimen.

    Stay safe
