Hi all
After 5 1/2 years on active surveillance my husbands cancer has progressed and he will be having a radical prostatectomy in a few weeks. For the first time in our almost 40 years together he is depressed (understandably) at the thought of impotence and is really struggling to deal with it all. Any advice or tips on how we can get through this together , both mentally and physically? He is 62 and very young in his outlook and we have a fantastic , loving, relationship, we’ve been though a lot together over the years but I am struggling with how best to help him..
Thanks
Ouafaeha,
Join the club. A month after I started on Hormone treatment everything failed for me. My saving grace is my libido crashed totally so at least I didn't think about it.
It's "all for the greater good". If that's what needs to happen, then so be it.
It won't last forever, you can still be a man without an erection.
Don't worry, think of it as you are recharging and will come out the other side, stronger.
It may still be a year until I am "firing on all cylinders again". If that's the price I must pay!!!
Good luck, there are plenty here with good advice, plenty in our situation.

Hello, my 56 year old husband is due to have radical prostatectomy next week ,by robot system, we have had all sorts of info on sex after the op and possible incontinence, he's so depressed too .I think all these brave men are worried about 'disappointing' their partners . Personally I think as long as you're supportive and have plenty of cuddles (and strokes ) things should be fine . Be positive , cross that bridge when you come to it is now I look at things. Love and good luck to everyone out there.
Thank you for posting that Sam,it's very encouraging,I'll show that to my partner tonight.
Aluna,
You have knocked the nail right on the head there.
Yes, it's hard (no pun intended). If mine comes back, Woo-Hoo!!!, But if not I can still be as much of a man as I was before.
If that's the price I must pay, so be it!
You are right about crossing that bridge, but if I don't know where the bridge is...
It might feel like the end of the world for some men but if you look at the bigger picture...

Hi Sam, can you please tell me what his dosage was as this is something I need to look in to. Was it 1 a week for 3 months or more?
I look forward to hearing from you.
Many thanks
Hi all if anyone is really upset about ED a vacuum pump puts the blood supply were it should be, and Viagra can obtain reasonable results.
All the best Ulls
Really encouraging, thank you for sharing. Just one quick question though , did you ask the consultant to spare the nerves or you were simply informed of the outcome post surgery?
Hiya, sorry for delay in replying, his initial dosage on leaving the hospital after op was three months taking one a day. Then after speaking to surgeon on follow up 3 months post surgery he said even though Pete was getting normal erections he should continue with sildenafil (one a day) for a further 7 months. I must admit though been very difficult getting more than one months worth at a time from our local surgery, they would only supply 8 tablets at a time to start with which was very frustrating and time consuming!
Take care
Sam x
Hi Stoney, we knew it was unlikely to spare nerves on one side as they already suspected it had just broken through the capsule so we agreed they should take whatever was necessary to clear the cancer. Luckily only one side of the prostate was infected so were able to spare the other side of nerves.
take care
