Hi I’m feeling emotional and upset today, having a down day I guess x my partner and i have only been together three years and he’s recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer he’s chosen to have radiotherapy which was totally his decision, he’s started on the chemo tabs two weeks ago and was told once pack of 28 tabs was taken he would need to go for his first hormone implant injection, he was the rung by our gp today and told he’s got to have first implant this Friday which isn’t the 28 days we where told x
This has really destroyed our once healthy sex life as he now relies on tabs to get an erection and that was just with taking chemo tabs and now he’s got to have the implants too we’ve been told this will worsen his sex drive, I know sex isn’t everything in a relationship but this has hit us both really hard, he’s only 57 and I’m 53 so not ready for the scrap heap yet x
Our gp has prescribed some tabs to help but he’s only allowed four tabs a month, expense I guess. Just feels like we have to plan our sex life now and it can’t be spontaneous x I miss the intimacy we had when we met x I know he really loves me and wants us to marry next year but I don’t know if I can commit to that extent x I love him to bits and feel bad for feeling like this x
Hi Kazdan.
I'm sorry that you have had to come here but welcome to the forum anyway.
I think you will find that the tablets are Bicalutamide which is to prevent tumour flare when the hormone injections start. Bicalutamide is an anti androgen which stops testosterone from reaching the cancer cells. It's normal to have the first hormone injection almost any time during the month of taking the tablets. This can be from about three days after starting the tablets to almost the end of the four weeks. It just depends on your oncologist and your GP.
With a PSA of 6.5 and a Gleason score of 6 or 7 the oncologist will probably be hoping for a cure so long as the tumour is contained in the prostate.
Please keep in touch and let us know how the treatment is progressing.
Kazdan
Is that correct, psa and gleeson the same? Has he had a MRI done, what did that show?
Steve
Sorry to ask so many questions Kaz, just to try and help u with some advice. I realize that you r going thru a lot.
I presume that after the chemo/HT they will continue treatment with Radiotherapy?
Did the MRI show that any tumour was contained within the prostate,? This is important because if it is the cancer should be curable which is obviously good news.
Steve
Kazdan, seamus47 is undoubtably correct, the meds are to prevent flare up. I’m 50 and my wife 49 too young to give up. There’s a section on the page about questions about sex, My labido has dropped off the scale but still enjoy the feeling of closeness, skin on skin. It’s not quite the same, I know, but without the treatment we wouldn’t have a future so small price to pay.
At least the ED treatment seems to be working for you, it might be worth checking your area guidelines for Ed treatment, Nice suggest that prostrate cancer is on an agreed list where viagra rather than generic drug (more reliable) is allowed. Also worth checking whether prostrate cancer diagnosis changes allowed frequency. Even worth seeing if different GP in practice will hold a different stance (males seem more understanding in my experience)
take your time it’s early days and pressure won’t help.
good luck and all the best for your journey
