My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic prostate cancer January 22, 2018. Gleason score 10 in all 12 biopsies. Cancer is in lymph nodes, pelvis, spine and ribs 5 - 11. Had 11 rounds of Taxotere that brought PSA from 230 to .15. Also had hormone therapy (xcheva and lupron). After 4 weeks PSA rose to 13 after stopping Taxotere, so started on a chemo pill for 2 months,  PSA still rising, did another 4 rounds of chemo, nothing was working and PSA kept rising. Referred to OHSU for a clinical trial and had a PSMA PET scan along with CT and additional bone scans.  Cancer seems to be spreading, PSA now up to 54. Starting on Xytiga but were being told that there's not much else to try if this didn't work. He didn't get into the nuclear medicine trial, so what else do you recommend?

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to hear that your dad has metastatic prostate cancer and that he's been told that if the Xytiga doesn't work there isn't much left to try.

I'm not a member of this group but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies. This could be because no one in this group knows of a current trial for your dad to join or simply because your post hasn't been seen yet. By replying to you it will 'bump' it back to the top of the page where it will hopefully be seen by someone who might be able to tell you about a trial that they're on. I'm also going to tag this group's Community Champion into my reply as he may be able to help further.

If you don't get any responses you could type the word 'trial' into the search facility in this group to see what previous posts there are that mention trials. You could also click on this link to Cancer Research UK's trial page to see what trials are currently available. However, the best people to discuss this with would be your dad's team as they have his full medical history and will be aware of what trials he might be suitable for.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your dad's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Hello   and welcome to the prostate group.

It is such a shame that it has to be under such circumstances.

I am so sorry to hear about your dad's situation.  His cancer is very aggressive and I’m sorry it does not appear to be responding to treatments.

I am not a doctor and cannot advise on treatments.  Unfortunately, I am also not aware of any further treatments which can be offered. I apologise for being so unhelpful about this.

This situation must be extremely distressing for you, your dad and all the family and I imagine that you’re wanting to know what will now happen.

Your dad will continue on whatever treatment he needs to counteract any problems that his cancer will cause him and this will either be managed by the clinical team his care is currently under or a more specialised clinical team if necessary. There are some very experienced and knowledgeable health professionals out there who will help your dad and you.

I believe you may all also need some additional emotional support and there will be services available locally that can offer that.  I suggest you contact your nearest Macmillan Information and Support Service to find this out.  To locate the  nearest centre click here or phone 0808 80 00 00, the Macmillan helpline.

As Latchbrook suggests if you could give me more detail about your dad’s circumstances, I may be able to offer more information and support.

  • Hi CF

Probably you best bet is to try and get on a clinical trial.

You can search for clinical trials at cancerresearchuk.org

There have been some good trials with immunotherapy for PC .

You could also try private clinics but you would have to fund treatment yourself.

    Regards

    Steve
