Fluid retention and UTI

Finished RT 10 weeks ago and have had 6 UTI so cannot have a psa test.  Ended up with catheter for 9 days.  That was an extremely painful experience with all the inflammation going on.   I also have swelling in lower legs and feet and gout in one foot.  Very frustrating with the UTI situation as I need a PSA to tell the doc how the Rt went.   Getting a call from him next week but no PSA .  Any opinions gratefully received as this is all frustrating and disappointing.

6 months on HT

thanks

  • Hello Jack (

i wouldn't worry about missing a PSA test at present, the more important matter in my view is to sort out the fluid retention and the UTI situation.

So the 6 months Hormone Therapy will have "put the cancer to sleep" and the Radiotherapy should have killed off the rouge cancer cells (along with some good cells too). Radiotherapy keeps on working long after your last fraction so your lowest or nadir PSA reading will be around January/February 2028.

You need to speak to your GP to establish the causes of the UTI's, the swelling and the Gout.

As for the catheter - I had one for 10 months - to be honest it never bothered me, and I never had a UTi during the period I had it. It did the job for me.

I can understand your frustration and disappointment but the symptoms you are describing my well not be connected to the cancer or the radiotherapy. It's important though to let your GP know whats going on.

Do let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Brian, thanks for the prompt reply.   My gp looked at my feet and said “don’t think it’s hear failure but you have gout in the right foot.  I am being referred to urology for the constant UTIs but not as an urgent case so I could be waiting.  I am thinking of going to see a urologist privately.  My oncologist is call next Thursday.  It will be the first time we have spoken since before RT in May.

  • Hi  , I’m with Brian, it’s too early for a PSA test.  Generally it’s not worth having a test for 3 months until the PSA settles.  RT can take 18+ months to bring the PSA to its lowest (nadir).  Try and get everything else settled first.

    Best wishes, David
