RT side effects

Some effects can come on immediately, especially if the RT causes any swelling.

The answer is to talk to the team about is on your next visit (today?).

 Sads if you are having pain, I would talk to the RT team before next week.  

No pain, just more frequent and worse flow. I’ll keep an eye on it. Thanks 

Strange as it may seem, make sure you are drinking plenty of fluids.  I was told at least 2 litres of water a day plus extra in warm / hot weather.

The first treatment can the worst for its effect on urine flow. This happened to me on the first treatment and on every Monday when I resumed treatment after the weekend break.

Note these effects can be more pronounced with SBRT compared to EBRT as the dose of radiation is higher. 

Usually you will get through it and things improve on subsequent sessions but if doesn't then talk to your radiotherapy team. The usual first line of defence is Tamulosin if you are not already taking it. This is well tolerated and the effects are pretty immediate so don't hesitate to request it if you're not already taking it. You can discontinue this medication after your treatment is finished.

In more serious cases of urinary retention Intermittent or indwelling catheters may be an option.
