I start my treatment this week. 21 days of Bicaluamide tablets and Leuprorelin injections every 3 months. How soon after starting did you start RT? Is alcohol ok during treatment? Am due to go on holiday on 15th August. Will the treatment have an effect on my enjoyment of the holiday? Sorry for the random questions

  • Hello Wilbur (

    Good questions, my understanding is:

    * Radiotherapy is usually 4- 6 months after starting Hormone Therapy, but it could be later depending how busy they are.

    * I continued to drink alcohol (within Government Guidelines of course Innocent) during Hormone Therapy although it's best if you don't. I gave it up for 6 weeks before and during Radiotherapy. You should check with your team.

    * Yes the side effects may have kicked in by mid August but we are all different. You need to try and keep as fit as possible. You also need to tell your travel insurance Company of your diagnosis,

I hope the above helps and you enjoy your holiday Sunglasses.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Thanks for that detailed reply Brian. Appreciate it

  • How long after the start of HT RT begins seems to be vey much "How long is a piece of string?". I was originally told three months but it was actually almost ten months and only then after I eyeballed the appointments team and put polite pressure on them.

However my eighty eight year old brother who is deemed fit enough for RT looks like his treatment will begin RT within four to six months of starting HT and that is at the same hospital and under the same team.

As for how the HT will affect you, I am afraid the standard reply is that we are all different. Apart from hot flushes, erectile disfunction and relatively minor mood swings I walked through all of it BUT the hot flushes and ED have persisted well over twelve months after ending the HT.

All I can offer you further is the very best of luck with the treatment and don't forget to come back here when ever you feel the need, nothing is too minor.
