Severe bladder pain after radiotherapy

I finished 28 day radiotherapy last Wednesday. The last few days of treatment were tricky as I had a catheter fitted and the bladder was swollen and sensitive. The catheter was removed the day after RT ended.

I now find myself in a very unhappy situation. I have not slept for four consecutive days due to the pain caused by the swollen bladder and urine infection. Strong pain killers make me drowsy but the pain still prevents me from sleeping. While I spent the night in A&E they took various blood and urine tests. It seems that my problem and the severe pain are caused by two things. Firstly, the radiation has caused the bladder to become inflamed and swollen. This will gradually subside over the next few weeks. Secondly, I have a urine infection – probably a result of the catheter. The generic antibiotic has no effect but when the test results come back it should be possible to find a targeted antibiotic which will remove the infection.

I am really not sure how to handle this. I cannot go much longer without sleep and in constant pain. I am already finding it difficult to concentrate. I hope nobody has had a similar experience but, if they have, any advice on how to cope would be welcome.

  • Hello

I am so sorry to read of your issues.

It's a medical issue and you have to trust the team dealing with your issues. All I can suggest is you keep in touch with them, confirm you are still in pain and need something to get you to sleep.

Do please let us know how you get on.

    Best wishes - Brian.
