Side effects after radiation of the prostate bed

Hi everyone, my husband had a prostatectomy in August 2021 , his PSA sat at 0.02 until October last year when it went up to 0.33   After a PSMA pet scan that showed nothing, it was still decided to have 33 radiation fractions on the prostate bed. pSA is now <0.02 so undetectable. However, radiation has unfortunately brought on uncomfortable side effects being constipation and cystitis
these being a constant shooting pain from the bowel that moves to the urethra . My husband was told this should calm down after three months after radiation but it is now 6 months , he has tried everything from movicol, bowel flush prunes but still battling .

I was wondering is anyone else has had these side effects and what was recommended . We feel the doctors are basically saying time will heal .

  • Hi  sorry to hear you OH is having problems.  I noticed nobody had replied, so me responding will bring you back up to the top.  Hopefully somebody with direct experience will respond.  Sadly with RT problems do occur but have a habit of settling down.  Has he had any tests (colonoscopy etc), to check out exactly what is occurring?  I presume you have tried dietary changes with fibre in particular and no alcohol.

    Best wishes, David

  • Hello ,

I'm very sorry your husband is still having these very unpleasant problems 6 months after RT.

I might be awarded 10 out of 10 for the bleedin' obvious, but has he been back to his doctors to seek help given he's still suffering after double the time they said it should clear up?

    Derek.
