Any idea of the wait times and qualification necessary for a PET/PSMA scan. I have a rising PSA ( 0.6 > 2.5 > 15) after stable 0.6 for 10 years following brachytherapy. Are there any side effects for the scan?
I guess waiting times vary quite significantly around UK. A few months ago I was quoted up to 8 weeks (in Nottingham, with its large well equipped teaching hospital trust), although in the event happened in just 5 weeks. I think some have to travel a considerable distance.
Hi Putrisoft These are the latest guidelines for having a PSMA PET scan which have been approved by NICE but basically for you it is when there is a PSA rise of 2 above your nadir, in other words 2.6. There is also the rate of increase to be considered.
My husband had 3 PSMA PET scans with minimal side effects - he just had to steer clear of children and pregnant women for a few hours after each scan.
Salvage treatment can keep you on the curative pathway so stay positive.
I had my PMSA scan mid Dec after a relatively short wait, no real side effects. . My post op PSA was 0,1 and rose to 0.2 on 2 consecutive monthly measurements hence being referred for PSMA.
The biggest challenge was lying still for 30 mins with arms above my head.
Got my results back early Jan, cancer still there but treatable through hormone therapy and radio therapy.
Hope it all works out okay
Hi Putrisoft
My 87 year old brother waited less than a fortnight from consultation to PET scan which was done last Monday (26th Jan). We were told that the results would be available within two weeks.
I'll believe it when I see it as the results of my scan at the same hospital in July 2023 took almost five weeks.
Time will tell.
Thanks that is exactly what I have been looking for. Looking to stop it before it runs away from me...
